DVLA historic enquiries

Yes you can, but just for research on the history of the vehicle is not now a reasonable cause. I am glad I immediately got the details for my P6 when I bought it. I know a couple of people whose recent requests rejected.

DVLA are only concerned with bulk selling of information to parking enforcement companies and the like to want to bother about historical enquiries.

That DVLA website is very misleading - it appears if the top half of the page is about enquiring about another vehicle (not yours) or its keeper and that is what the reasonable cause list applies to. The section at the bottom of the page titled
Information about you or your vehicle says that "You can ask for information about your current vehicle or a vehicle that used to be registered in your name. It doesn’t cost anything." and says nothing about reasonable cause?

No surprise there then...

Information about you or your vehicle says that "You can ask for information about your current vehicle or a vehicle that used to be registered in your name. It doesn’t cost anything." and says nothing about reasonable cause?

You get very limited information back now though. It used to be copies of whatever they had on file, now you get a few bits and a disclaimer saying that as previous owners haven't given specific consent to their information being passed on, you can't have it. This is Because the data protection act has been superceded by the GDPR by the EU.

Doesn't stop DVLA selling your info though.....

This is the response from FHVC , when I pointed it out to them:-
Reply to me from FBHVC :-
Hi Derek,

Thank you for your email to our Secretary regarding the V888 service from DVLA, which has been passed to me. FBHVC were not aware of this change.
I have checked the position with DVLA and it seems that they have reassessed what constitutes ‘reasonable cause’ for requesting this information and have issued a new version of the V888 form to reflect this. Details of what is considered to be ‘reasonable cause’ are available at - www.gov.uk/request-information-from-dvla
I specifically enquired if a request from the current keeper of a vehicle for the full history of that vehicle for the purpose of researching its history was still permitted and the reply was that this was NOT considered to be ‘reasonable cause’.
So, with this new approach DVLA were correct to reject the V888 request from your fellow member, but the explanation they provided was incorrect.

I am sorry I cannot provided better news on this topic.

Glad I submitted my requests before the change then. Without them, tracing ex-Rover engineers would not have been possible.

this is a bit of a shame as we all know DVLA sells information to companies but I would have thought although a specific request by an owner being now rejected it ought allow clubs to ask . thus is a member of a club has an interesting car that in its view warrants research on its background. then is that to reasonable cause ? that way history can be recoded by a club for its historic car(s) that are of public interest.
