Electronic Distributor which is the best for reliability?

The power modules are waterproof, so being covered in water is not a problem. Mine is mounted at the front down low outside of the engine bay. They can be mounted under the guard, behind the grill, anywhere really that is not within the confines of the engine bay. I have seen them mounted beside the bracket that holds the bonnet prop when open, but you do need to cut the bonnet edge rubber at that location so the module is then in a constant stream of cool air. A friend of mine had one mounted there for over 30 years with no problems at all.

Mine was mounted in a similar position to Thijs by the Melbourne agent in 1978. His comment at the time (and we started with one on a Datsun 240K) was that if the system was going to fail it would do so in the first 3 months. Hope I haven't put a moz on it! Certainly improved start-up and idle but the car does need to be warmed.
Only problem in 42 years was the need to replace the chopper a couple of years ago when I bent it whilst trying to sort an idling problem which turned out to be due to a faulty new white plastic valve on the brake servo.

I have fitted a full replacement dizzy from power spark (Simon- BBC) set up for my 3500auto. complete unit with sports coil . had to play with wiring a bit as not. an electrician but got it sorted. engine starts runs well. ( I also use those pellets in fuel tank) so far 2 years .no issues. I removed my old part worn original dizzy ( 32K form new) .kept in just in case I sold car later so would throw in all original's parts .not all want modern stuff but this way they get a choice! Personally prefer electronic as no wear on cam of point and timing drift to worry about etc.

Hi Thijs,
Whereabout in the engine bay did you have your Lumenition power module?

For me, I would not use anything else except Lumenition, and that is based on my experience with 24 years of non stop Lumenition success.

Ron.

i have to say in a previous life we sold/fitted 1000's probably 10's of thousands, they never gave problems, i know of cars which have had it fitted for what must be 40 years, and other sytems which have been fitted to about a dozen different cars, it would certainly be my choice of system if i wanted a simple points delete

I've never had problems with Lumenition either, although my experience is limited, but I did chatting with a bloke on the 'net, and in the conversation he mentioned that he was a service agent for Lumenition, which involved checking "faulty" units, and in his experience most of the problems were caused by faulty installation, either incorrect wiring, the wrong coils being used, or just ham-fisted incompetence, actual faulty units were a real rarity.

Yes, l bought both my P5B & the Denovo 3500 with Lumenition fitted. Any starting problems encountered over the years haven't been down to the ignition system so l've been happy with it.

Thanks for all the replies everyone i think i'm going down the Simon-BBC route seems to have many good reviews ;)

I would agree, i used to work for a an agent for them, we had a machine to test them, it never ever got used, i sold it some ten years ago, i think it had been out the box twice ever!

My '73 3500 had a Lumenition unit on the nearside inner wing next to the coil. It worked fine for many years and countless miles until one day it just quit. My learned mechanic friend explained the trickery was all embedded in a resin blob under the finned alloy housing, and that it wasn't possible to repair it. He recommended I opt for a Pertronix Ignitor in the distributor and also fitted an MSD multiple spark discharge Street Fire box out of sight above the passenger glove box. It now idles better than ever and I'm very happy indeed. Hope that doesn't put the jinx on it now!

I have an electronic distributor manufactured by performance ignition in Australia.
It's fully electronic, not an add on to my existing dizzie.
Not cheap but definitely worth the spend.

I also purchased their scorcher performance coil and leads.
Cheers
Mick
