The engine proper wasn't painted just bare alloy, but the inlet manifold, intake fittings and rocker covers were originally painted a neutral grey witha silver aircleaner assembly. If youre having them redone I'd suggest powder coating for long life.

A good scrub and degrease will improve the overall looks of the engine. If you seal it well a pressure washer will help knock the grot into submission, but do be careful

I don't know what you tastes are on the painted bits , but here are some ideas:

Plain grey as on the original - http://beerinc.com/rstca/andre.html

One of my favourites is the rocker cover treatmet on Glenn Wilsons old Federal 3500S with black and brushed aluminum... http://beerinc.com/rstca/nm3500S/rovalvcv.JPG. - I think ianp6man now has this car

Red powder coating looks very trick but perhaps a bit indiscreet for a Rover

Isn't a satin black air filter box correct ?

On the Later ones it is, earlier were the silvery/greyish colour. The one in the pic is the later type as it only has the clips to remove the air filter element at one end so should as you say be black.

Harvey, My `71 3500S has an "open" one end silver air filter, it has always been so as far as I know. Should it be black ? Not that I am a stickler for originality ! :? Just wonder...

Re V8 engine colour. When I rebuilt my unit originally in 1997 I painted it with an "over the counter" heat resistant silver grey, in 10 years Summer use it was looking decidedly rough, flaking and discoloured in places, so on the advice of a friend with a Rover V8 engined Dax (which is immaculate) I bought a small pot of Smooth Hammerite Black and a similar one of white, blended the two together- with the addition of a touch of blue, and the end result was a perfect match for the original Rover engine grey. The Dax was built 6 years ago and the engine paint is perfect, no lifting, flaking or discolouration. If I could work out how to upload pics I would do so, so that you could judge for yourselves.
Powder coating would last but the prep necessary and the cost ! Is it worth it ?

I've got a '72 3500S and that's the silver colour, can't remember if it opens one or both ends at the moment, but that colour is correct for that year AFAIK, it's the later (at a guess 1974ish onwards) that are black. I was looking at a series 1 and that had the silver one that opened both ends.

The number crunchers will come on and give us the definitive answer as to the dates of the changes. :D

I scrubbed the block as clean as I could and gave it a blast of Alu paint I bought from frost.

The Rockers and inlet manifold are powder coated, I had the air intake elbows etc done the same time. There seems to be a stock grey colour the powder coater used and it is pretty close to the original. I have powder coated before and looks the part.

"I bought a small pot of Smooth Hammerite Black and a similar one of white, blended the two together "

That's what I did but never liked to admit to it !
Years ago and it's not flaked off
