Engine failure on dyno.

It's not only on Dyno's that that sort of thing happens. Most spectacular I recall was a mate and colleague of mine in the engine room with a 2,2250 hp 7.5" X 7.5" V12, when there was a slightly asthmatic sort of noise and a con rod shot out the side of the engine, between his legs, out through the 1/8" plate sidewall of the vehicle and was lost to the side of the railway. This whilst pulling well over the ton. He needed a fag after.

Look at the video again at around 15 seconds and the big curved pipe that exhausts the turobcharger seems to suddenly go under tension and the engine note changes too at that point.
I'd wager the dyno had a malfunction and caused that motor to go pop like that.

Hi, on the contrary I think the engine committed suicide before they could
hit the kill switch (which wouldn't have worked).

At about 12 secs the revs started picking up and there was more smoke as
the crankcase started venting then as you say the pipe jumped because
something else was going through it (oil).

I think it started running on it's own oil then it hydrauliced and then came to
a stop!!

I agree 100% Definitely running away on lube oil. That's why they couldn't control it or shut it down. You should see a big marine diesel do that, very scarey indeed!

Hee hee, I guess that you could say that.
More fun that watching a gas turbine spit it's blades into the distance on start-up, that's for sure, although the looks on the pilot's and the dyno operator's faces would be similar, I think.......

Better on the dyno than in the truck with you sitting over the top of it.

That could interrupt your day!!

Hi guys , have seen 2 strokes run with the plug cap off , and when we were kids turned a tractor over , it ran on the oil in the sump until it went bang ! Think that poor old motor was fueling off the sump gases . only way to shut it down is to stop air intake . But i wouldn't want to approach it with a rag to through up the air intake !

Basically it's running compression , ignition at the final stage , no stopping until she blows !

A mate works on Caterpillar engines and he keeps a gaffer taped phone book handy for the initial start and run-up of a rebuild. If it starts to run away, the phone book goes over the intake, and it stops, sharpish.
