Engine mount dilemma...

Hey groovers, I'm looking at my Cortina project engine mounts and I can't decide if I should use the P6b mounts I have (small rubber), or modify a set of Landrover asymetric brackets to be symmetrical and use holden v8 mounts. The Landrover brackets will give 3 mounts on the block as opposed to two, but the whole design will mean a lot more faffing around than just cutting the chassis mounts out of my donor and using 'all Rover', which may also be more pleasing (on paper) to an engineer. Are the small mounts prone to failure at all? This is only a cruiser, not a race-car (yet lol). What would you do? Are the small mounts hard to get?

Hi, If you use Land Rover, either the round or rectangular ones, and you mount them at an angle, to put them in shear as well as compression, it tends to soften their effect. So to a certain extent you can tune them to what you want. Why not make mount brackets from scratch? Or does that create complications for the registration process, like getting them approved by an engineer?

I’ve got these captive mounts to use in my project, well just the steel tube and bush bits. Pretty sure there’s some decent Australian companies selling similar universal items, Tuff mounts?

Gonna weld them to original block mounting steel brackets.

Hi, That's a modern aftermarket version of old school practice of using LR series rear hanger brackets -

I find it strange they opt to use them with the bolt in that orientation because it puts a lot of the load onto shoulder of the bushes, I would have used them with the bolt in 90 degrees to that shown.

I spoke to Tough-mounts here, they're unable to help without the car in front of them, as it's not a common conversion here.

I'm no fabricator so I'm trying to use as many 'factory' parts as possible, and I think that will also please the engineer....I hope.

Yes I hadn’t noticed that previously, it does look a bit odd, similar designs I’ve seen on other engines always have the bolt in shear.
That’s the way I’d planned to do it too, so bolt can be slid in easily from front to back once engine is located.

I didn’t know about people using the old Landy shackle hanger brackets, nice!
 
Have you considered more industrial marketed engine mounts?
I'm changing the engine mounts on my boat, they are common captive mounts. The Marine stores charging 2 to 3 times the price that the same unit is available from an industrial supplier.
The marine mounts from what I can see are better quality than the 'standard' V8 bobbins that just rip apart when pushed. They are more costly but I think worth it, especially if you are starting from nothing.

Good video - must be amazing to be paid to work on such projects. I like those puck style mounts. I'm thinking I'll just go with the standard Rover mounts. Are the early/later style the same height? I know they're different diameters - I have a set of early brackets but I'm wondering if they'll be interchangeable (with appropriate engine brackets) later?

I made my own to fit the rover into my capri , the idea being that the capri is not modified so it can be reversed back to stock 2l ohc engine .
In the pix the engine is sitting on a rough cradle so ignore th hacked up looking chasis bit . There have been crush tube since added inside the 50mm box section , and the bit the rubber mount bolts to is a bit os angle I heated and bent one side of to fit .

Looks good - I've cut a gaping big hole in my transmission tunnel and wiped out the original mounting towers in the Cortina (all necessary to fit), so there's no turning back for me lmao.
 
Regarding the rubber mount. If the mount is placed at an angle like in Hamsav's pics above it won't be long before they start to sag, if you look closely at pic 2, it already has.
It may pay to choose a mount with a steel interleaf, these are stiffer, and more resistant to sagging.

If looking at the CBS mount best make sure that is is actually a steel interleaf and not just a moulding in the rubber.
 
Do you mean a steel section in the middle? These look like it's just rubber moulding - or is it written somewhere they have steel? Cheers,

Yes steel in the middle. The rubber covers the steel making it hard to see.
I cannot see it in the description, which is why the need to confirm.
I have the reinforced mounts on my RV8 at present, they do not sag.

Those rubber mounts are some old rooted ones that came with one of the rover engines I bought , either that or they are capri ones . The idea was to use the standard Capri engine mounts , which are part of the front X member and I plan to get some other ones when I suss the height thing . I might have to lower the whole plot down a bit if things get tight with the 4hp22 and RR bell housing because I dont want to get into cutting firewalls and floors . I had the engine /trans assy in there before ( when I made the headers ) but that was with the 5 speed ( Im still lookin at a hand clutch ....just like a motorbike , right there on the gear lever ) so there is a bit of final fitting to do.
Here is an early thought .... but I have since got a 3.9 serp motor to play with , came with a megasquirt magic box .DSC03118.JPGDSC03119.JPG
