Engine removal

Hi, finally time to pull the engine, been contemplating this for a couple of years. I've only ever removed VW bug engines, so this is a first.

A mate has lent me a stand and crane to undertake the task, although there are no straps/chains, just a large hook. It may be obvious but which is the best way to attach any straps/chains to the engine?

Would it be wise to get a load leveller? Also, the engine stand has two bolts with it to screw into engine, although I'm unsure of the thread size??

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

There are (or should be) lifting brackets bolted to the heads. (V8). I've never used a load leveller myself. You will need more than 2 bolts to hold the engine to the stand. Bellhousing bolts are 3/8" UNC thread size, which is what I am currently using to secure one of my engines to a stand.

It sounds like you're missing one then, but it doesn't really matter, I only use 2 on opposite corners anyway.

If you're removing the gearbox as well, it's easier to get the back of the car up in the air a bit, and don't forget to remove the engine earth strap ;)

Regarding a load leveler.
definitely buy one, I have used one on every engine removal in the last 10 years.
On my 1935 Chevrolet standard, I had to almost adjust the engine to over 45 deg to get it over the high front grill.
A bit heart stopping at the time.....also useful for other jobs too
