Engine Side Plates

Hi Dane. How did you get on with repairing your side plate? I have just had to take mine off my 2000TC as there was a small hole in the r/h plate. After cleaning it up with a wire brush on a drill the holes go all along the bottom flange above the screw holes. I have added a photo of before removal and after clean up.

I wouldn't bother repairing that side plate. You can still buy new ones. I bought an off side one from Geoff at Wins a couple of years ago and it fits fine with no problems. Recently bought and fitted a near side one from him and again all looks good.

Thanks for that, m8. I am going to buy a new one as soon as I can afford it. Have been thinking of way I could possibly repair the bad one. For £65 it's not worth risking blowing your engine with a botched up plate. Thanks again. :)

Yes I think your wise to fit a new one. My old ones looked sound enough but I didn't want to have to do the job again in the near future. It's a right pain removing and refitting some of those small bolts!

Tell me about it!! Even worse when you can't find your imperial spanners! 9mm too small, 10mm too big! Lol.

Revisiting this way old post but I had that side plate replaced with a new one once the parts were back in stock.

I have often wondered about coating the inside of the sideplates with a suitable paint-like substance, something that would fill pin holes, and at the same time act as a rust preventative.

I considered this once but came to the conclusion that l didn't want unattached paint (or whatever) floating around in the waterways/radiator/heater & clogging things up.

A few years ago I repaired a pin hole in one side plate with plumbers solder. Still holding strong today.
