Engine swap

I'm replacing my worn, low oil pressure v8 engine with a lovely 44k mile v8 and am nearly ready to get the old lump out. I am keeping the autobx as its a good one. I have borrowed a hoist from steve benyon (thanks so much!!) and got all the kit to do the job. My question is whether its easier to take the whole engine and auto box out as one unit, unbolt the box and fit to the new engine before putting the new unit back in. Or, should I unbolt the bell housing and trans cooler pipe mountings on engine, support the box and just take out the engine? If so, is it easy to mesh the torque converter to the box?

Take it in one. You will need to lift the rear of the car to get it out over the front
cross piece where the bonnet closes onto, but it will be a LOT easier to split on the
bench than rummaging around on the floor with stuff falling in your eyes and down
your neck collar etc.
Plus, you can give the engine bay a good clean and touch up if needed.

this topics answered my next question as well.....one thing to note though the torque converter should stay on the box when splitting, bolted on through the flex plate.

I assume you mean unbolt the converter and then remove it with the box. The actual procedure depends on what type of box.

BW35: Remove box from bellhousing, remove bellhousing from engine, remove converter from flexplate.

BW65: Remove flexplate bolts retaining converter, and then remove bellhousing, converter and box from engine as one complete unit.
