Engine tick

Rebuilding the rocker assemblies is a bit of a job - not really hard, but has to be done right. The aftermarket shafts didnt come with the notches mentioned in the workshop book. I drilled out the plugs in the end of my shafts, and the interior was full of oil gunk, that could easily block the holes that should feed the rockers.
-remove rocker covers - 4 philips head screws, some wrangling needed to clear the carbs. Have new gaskets on hand
-undo the 4 bolts progressively - a bit at a time each until the load is gone. Take a pic of the way the rockers are handed, some LH, some RH; aftermarket types may look different, but are handed.
- pull the 2nd rocker from an end sideways against the spring, look at the underside for signs of wear as in my pic.
- if dismantling, remove split pin at one end, washer, rocker, pedestal (sometimes difficult!), next rocker, spring, rocker, pedestal etc...
- note direction oil holes underneath are pointing - towards the centre of the engine - important that new shafts have their holes point in same direction.
- reassemble - check that the new shafts have the ends plugged - apparently some do not. Sequence should be split pin, washer, 3 sets of ( rocker, pedestal, rocker, spring) then rocker, pedestal rocker, washer, split pin.
I would worry about verifying you have oil pressure before looking at the rockers - they should look more oily than that pic.
Look at this.... Home
