FBHVC Survey IMPORTANT

Thanks Nick, I did email Mark and suggest maybe he could put a link from the front page of the P6Club website so between the two of us he should get the message.

All the best

Nice to see such a positive response. I think given the huge numbers of people involved in our movement not ony enthusiasts but suppliers and service providers we do actually carry quite a big stick and with the FBHVC to wield it on out behalf any anti classic legislation will be harder to implement.
Who knows maybe the rooling date for tax free status will be reintoduced. :D

Thank you for sticky status Richard, I hope your treatment is progressing well.

All the best

'Tis done. [Grumpy mode] Cynical me says Cameroon and his monkeys are too busy splashing our cash abroad to consider reinstating the rolling road tax exemption.

After all it's only money created by us the taxpayers. [/Grumpy mode]

I hesitate to be the voice of disent, But I think we should be careful about
the information we give about how we use or don't use our cars. I know
some people will find this hard to believe but the government will twist these
facts round to suit their own aims. I know we contribute to the ecomony by
dealing with companies that support us, but if we were not here they would
adapt and do something else that makes money. We could contribute even
more by paying road tax on our cars, so I don't think we will see an expansion
of the rolling tax exemption date. Most car adverts for pre '72 cars make a
point of saying they are tax free, which I think gives out the wrong message.
Plus I think the '60s was the birth of the modern car and mostly are capable
of being used on a daily basis. Also they are requiring us to keep our cars
insured all the time or SORN them and a fine if we don't comply in an attempt
to tackle a problem that is not of our making i.e. uninsured drivers.

Colin,

I think you present a fair alternative opinion. While it would be nice to see a rolling exemption for cars over 25-30 years old, I have wondered myself if it would be simpler to just to introduce a fixed flat fee for all cars over a certain age? Some of the advantages would be that it would be fairer to all classic car owners and it would perhaps be more appealing to our Government if it meant no loss of income on the overall amount of VED they collect.

The current situation where we have the 1/1/73 cut-off is certainly an anomaly. As time goes on, owners like me with a '75 car will have to keep coughing up £205 a year to tax a car that is only slightly older than a tax exempt car. Also, low value classic cars registered between 1/1/73 and 1/3/01 are probably more likely to be scrapped than pre-1/1/73 cars if they keep hiking up the 1/1/73-1/3/01 rate (it has gone up 20% from £170 to £205 in the last 6 years (whereas the pre 1/1/73 rate has increased from £0 to £0). On the other hand, I would not want to see existing tax exempt owners having to start paying. So, I tend to think the ideal situtation from a purely classic car perspective would be to raise the VED slighlty on modern cars to fund making all cars over (say) 30 years tax exempt on a rolling basis?

Motorists are like a magical pinata for governmnet, one that just keeps giving no matter much how you beat it. :)
BTW, I believe that Ministerial cars are tax exempt. :D

Survey filled in. I agree with your comments regarding road tax. After all some modern cars are free because they fall into low emissions bracket & we all know that a correctly tuned classic car can put out a similar output as a lot of modern cars. Diesels are not enviro friendly as far as i am concerned, we gat them in for MOT pumping smoke & such out but still pass. EGR systems & charcoal canisters are looked at as being a modern invention but they have been used for years in other countries on classic era vehicles too.

I've completed the survey, myself.

This subject has also been posted on the forum of The Fiat Motor Club GB(which i'm also a member , besides The P6 Club).

There has been some interesing points raised, we may have to tread very carefully here.
