Filler tube sealant

Hi All,

I had to remove the rear deck panel on my 2000TC the other week. I noticed a red rubber like sealant on the area where the big rubber hose connects to the filler cap tube (red area in attached image) . When I removed the hose the sealant pealed away. Now things are back together I've got a leak when full into the boot. My guess is the sealant was there to fill the arease where the two halves of the filler cap tube were welded together.

Any suggestions as to what fuel safe sealant will work in that area? I'd prefer something that doesn't bond the the rubber hose so I can get things a[part safely in the future.

Thanks,

Steven

Permatex #3 will work, thought it's not the actual sealant spec'd. It isn't needed because of the weld, it's just needed period.

Thanks Vern. I'll see if I can grab some this weekend. I believe the original specified sealant is NLA.

The original sealant is still around, or rather a product to the same spec, but obtaining it is another matter. It seems to be a industrial product now and only available in manufacturing quantities. There are also some aircraft products that look very much the same and are used for fuel, but again availability is an issue.

The aircraft stuff is likely to be one of the grades of PRC fuel tank sealant.
Good luck getting it off again without frequent references to the Profanisaurus, though.

If you know someone who fixes those newfangled flying machines, they may be able to assist with a small amount left at the bottom of a tin.

I 've used in the past gasket sealants from a tube that they wrote on the tin that they were heat and fuel resistant. I 've never had any problems.

I've never had any problems after using no sealant at all. Either I've been lucky or the OP's leak is actually caused by the tube not being properly in place, rather than lack of sealant.

Willy, the tube has obvious misalignment at the seams. I've filed it to try improve without sealant but to no avail. I've used Permatex No. 3 on it now and will report on results when it's cured a little longer.

Well think I found out why it was weeping. Turns out I have a hairline crack in the elbow of the filler. Fortunately I have a spare one on the shelf so fingers crossed that was the issue.
