Fitting SD1 vitesse alloys to 3500s

Hi all,

I've seen a set of vitesse alloys advertised which i'd like to fit to a 3500s. I know there have been many threads about this but they all seem to cover slightly different aspects of what needs to be done. Could someone summarise what needs to happen if you swap of the standard steel wheels for the vitesse alloys?

Does panel work need to be done?
Do you have to change the studs on the hub?
Will the original nuts fit or do you need new ones, if so are these easy to source?
What tyre size is considered ok?
Will there be any adverse affects on the car as a result, i've heard the alloys are very heavy?
What extra bits beyond tyres do I need to budget for?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

"Does panel work need to be done?" - Only on the back, maybe. A scissor jack between the chassis rail and the 'D' post and ease it a bit. But first try different wheels in place because of machining differences.

"Do you have to change the studs on the hub?
Will the original nuts fit or do you need new ones, if so are these easy to source?" - Change either the studs or the nut. You can use either SD1 studs and nuts, Ford studs are another option and could be easier to find. Or approach Home and tell him you want nuts to go on your existing studs.

"What tyre size is considered OK?" - That depends what size wheels you're using whether they are true 15" 'Vitesse' wheels or some of the 14" ones.

Will there be any adverse affects on the car as a result, i've heard the alloys are very heavy? - Yes they can be heavier but you probably won't notice the difference.

What extra bits beyond tyres do I need to budget for? - Studs and nuts, centre caps and any refurb costs.

Hi Colin,

Thanks for that, really helpful! I believe they are true Vitesse alloys so the 15 inch ones. I have seen a fair bit of discussion about tyre sizes so hopefully i'll be able to make some sense of what's been written previously.

Mine are running 205/65 15's and they are very close to the original 185/14s

Do you use a certain brand of tyre on yours Richard? I've just purchased the alloys and will have them refurbished over the winter and new rubber put on them in the spring ready for the 2020 season.

Does anyone know the exact depth and diameter of the holes on the 15 inch vitesse alloys? I need them to work out what size nuts I need so I can use the existing P6 studs?
