FLASHER PROBLEM

Can anyone help with my flasher problem
I have an early Rover workshop manual and a Haynes manual dated 75,unfortunately neither of these shows the indicator circuit with Hazard warning.
I have recently refitted all four wings and am trying to sort the electrics...... My car,a 72 2000TC is fitted with two Lucas 9FL, 12amp flasher units each has two pins. None of the indicator lights are flashing. Each of the flasher units has power but no output. Both the left and right dash lights operate correctly but do not flash when I operate the indicator stalk. The hazard switch has only one live inlet, whether off or on and has no effect whatsoever...... There appears to be enough voltage to just light my circuit tester but not enough to light the indicator bulbs when operating the indicator stalk..... Am considering ordering two new flasher units and a hazard switch but am not convinced that will solve the problem Would appreciate any assistance please.

The hazard flasher unit and the indicator flasher unit should be different types, (7FL & 9FL spring to mind). The hazards are operating twice the load that the indicators are.

Hi George,

I gave up using the Lucas units years and years ago as they proved to be too unreliable. Just obtain modern replacements, they will likely be a different size, but at least they will be reliable.

As you say though, the actual problem in your case is probably elsewhere, rather than confined to the flasher units.

Ron.

Hi, another possibility is the hazard switch, the contacts fur up and cause problems so keep
working the switch in and out a number of times and squirt switch cleaner in as well if you
can. Because all indicator connections go through the hazard switch so that it can change it
from two to four way.

Thanks lads... will play around with the hazard switch this morning, and if there is no change will order replacement switch and flashers and start from there.

Sprayed the flasher switch last night. Tried it half a dozen times this morning...... All indicators are now working including the dash lights but no hazards... one of the flasher units is warm and clicking quietly......now having a cup of tea to contemplate the next move.
It looks to me to be either the hazard switch or the other flasher unit.... will swap over the flasher units which appear to be the same. And hopefully sort something out as to what is the problem. Will be back later.

Swapped over the flasher units... as perhaps expected the indicators would not work using the stalk., I then operated the hazard switch, and the hazard lights worked fine. This in my view points to the hazard flasher unit as the culprit... Intend replacing both flasher units, just to be sure.

if i were you i'd get a few modern relays as ron says - if you need help wiring it post a wiring diagram for your car and i'm sure we can draw on it for you!

George,

The problem is the current rating on your existing flasher units.

The original units work by heating and cooling a metallic strip within the unit. If your units are indeed 12 amp, there will be insufficient load on them to cycle reliably.

For the indicator, you need a unit that's rated at approx 4 amp.....(2 x 21W) + 5W warning @ 12V = (47/12) = approx 4 amp.

For said indicator flasher you need an 8FL, Type 36....NOS ones come up on ebay quite often. The modern Lucas items fail regularly, and as for the generic pattern parts that are being sold.....

I posted on this a while ago: http://www.classicroverforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19968&p=167816&hilit=8fl#p167816

The alternative, of course, is to go to solid-state units.
