Flat Spot suggestions

Since fitting Lumention ignition last year, V8 sweetness and light has reigned until returning from the Clacton Show in May, when an increasing flat spot has developed from stationery. Really long (and dangerous) pause before normal service resumed, but still pulling strongly through the rev range once away. Tickover also lumpy (500rpm or so) and prone to stalling , so dashpots filled, however, haven't yet had time to take out on a decent run to see if this has helped (still stalled when I got home). As I say, once off the line, running fine. Any thoughts (as I am no great mechanic)?

Many thanks as always.

Just a thought, I had very similar symptoms recently. I had convinced myself that I was experiencing a carburettor flat-spot concern, to the extent that I had the carburettors rebuilt, but to no avail. Then, I noticed that the 'flat-spotting' became worse as the engine bay warmed up.

Then I adopted the old cigarette lighter principle - it can only be fuel or ignition - so, I chose the other. I took the distributor to an ignition specialist (mine is electronic too) for checking out. Later that day, the ignition fellow rang me and asked me to bring in the ignition coil for test. I did that and straight away the coil was found to be in a very poor condition, due to its cooling oil having leaked out. He sold me a new coil and, instantly all was well. It seems that I needlessly spent $A800 on the SUs, much to my consternation!

This may not help your case, but having been around engines for over sixty years, I had really convinced my self that there was a flat-spot concern.

Good luck,

Mike Allfrey (Melbourne, Australia)

Thanks all! Pleased to say that my brother-in-law, P Garrod Auto Repairs, has worked his magic on the carbs and we are away again!! He was apprenticed to a main BL Dealer back in the day, so really knows his stuff when it comes to the old days. There is some evidence of wear, so a refurb may lie in the future, but all good for now.
