Hi

Could well be the bush has gone. Only way to tell is to either remove the gearstick, which is very easy. Remove the centre console and 3 bolts hold the gearstick in place. Alternatively get under the car and have a look at the bush from underneath.

If it went all of a sudden then either the bush has fallen off the bottom of the lever or you have the later type of selector striker lever and the plastic bush has fallen off. Looking from underneathe is easiest, you can also check that the 3 bolts that hold the spherical seat for the gearlever are still in place while you're there.

Thanks every one for your helpful replies I have now taken out the gear stick and the problem was the plastic bush.On there is a ball bearing when you push it it goes into the bush.On the gear stick there is a grove is this were it slots into body Does this lock the bush into place? Can any body help?

It's not supposed to have a ball bearing in there, it's supposed to have a proper pin, which locates in the slot in the ball of the lever and stops the lever spinning round. Someone has probably lost the pin in the past and stuck a ball bearing in there instead in the hope that it will do the same job, which it won't. The plastic spherical seat is still available if needed, and I've got a pin in an auto lever which I think is the same.

Thank you Harvey p6 for your help.I have ordered a new bush but I am not sure if it comes with a new pin.I would be most grateful if you could supply the pin you have. How much would you like for it ? I am very keen to get the p6 back on the road again. Thanks again for your time.

Hi Again,
The part I have ordered is 571933 or have I got this wrong.

571933 is the gearlever spherical seat, 540959 is the pin that stops the lever spinning.

Hi Again,
Just ordered 2 pins keep one as a spare.Hope to have the car up and running by the weekend.Thank you for your guidance and help.

Bob

The plot thickens,I have replaced the new bush and pin on the gear stick much better placed everything back together but still have a floppy gear stick The only thing I can think of is that there must be a bush that fits onto the dome end of the gear stick and into the gear select rod.Is this right? Can any body help?
regards Bob

I assime you have assembled the spherical seat into the two alloy castings correctly. (With the plate for the grommet underneath both of them not in between.)

When you look at the lever (below)

http://www.rover-classics.co.uk/images/ ... ly_jpg.htm

has yours got the round bush on the bottom or has it gone missing? If that ball is steel then there should be a bush in the selector rod that it fits into,

Part 90622363 in the illus below.

but even if you have the plastic on the lever it may well be the wrong lever )

If that's missing it needs a lever, if not it will most likely be the selector striker lever.

The way it was put together like this
371169 rubber boot 593617 is first then 591478 fits in to the rubber boot fit gear stick though placing the plastic bush into the cut out then place 591985 and bolt it up?
is this correct

If you've got the plate that the boot fits on to between the two alloy halves of the seat that's wrong. The plate for the boot goes directly on top of the remote, then the bottom alloy part, then the spherical seat and lever, then finally the top alloy piece with the reverse detent.

Hi All,

Sorry to visit an old post but I was wondering what part number 593617 is supposed to be? My gearstick rattles a lot when I get up to around 60. The pear shaped rubberised bit at the bottom of the stick is in place, However I dont appear to have that part number.

593617 goes directly on top of the remote, the spherical seat (571933) fits on top of it, followed by the cover.

That illustration shows all the parts, but they're all over the place, if you tried to assemble it all according to how it looks in that pic you'd never do it.

Think: Morcambe & Wise.

I am playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!"

Gearlever buzz is a common problem but can normally be cured if all the parts are in good condition, and correctly assembled, with a few applications of grease in the right areas.

Aaaah, thanks Harveey P6. I was trying to put it back together how it looked on the diagram and figured it must be impossible. I am sure I am missing a rubber part somewhere. I suspect this is in my haynes manual (2000 and 2200 all models 1963 - 1977) as part number 63 on page 124 refered to as a 'rubber sealing pad'. There is no sign of it.

A few of my parts look different to the diagram in my haynes manual. On my 2000sc the way it came apart part number 591478 was sandwiched between parts 571933 and 591985. With part 571933 slotted into part 593617 which is in turn sat on the remote. Is this correct?

Thanks,
Dayle
