Front crankshaft oil seal, not rope, part numbers?

Hi all,

The front crankshaft oil seal looks as if it should be replaced, it's the usual material (not rope), is this the same as the generic Rover V8 front crankshaft oil seal fitted to SD1 and Range Rover Classic?

If it's a lipseal then either the timing cover has been swapped for one from an SD1, (if it's a P5B/P6B engine) or the P6B cover has been modified. Either way I would think it's an SD1 seal that's fitted.

I understood all P6Bs manufactured from around 1973/4 onwards got the later lip seal? Not sure what engine numbers would denote this if in fact they do at all.

To make things more complicated, you can have a kit with a special lip seal to convert the P5/P6 front cover to SD1 seal design. I have done it, because I have to fit some other things on my engine, although my front cover (with rope seal) was dry. If it´s the same with the lip seal conversion, we´ll see ;)

A few parts dealers seem to stock these lip seals as a replacement for front rope.
Got mine from a chap who use to travel to the U/S a lot, pretty sure they were fitted to Buick v6 engines
Clive.

the whole timing cover is identical to the p6 iirc?

To change front seal ? No. If you have a P6 cover and you want to convert to lip tye seal (see Harvey´s info), you must look for a conversion kit, this lip seal has a metal housing and you must grind away the stop marks for the rope type seal.
With the conversion kit (got mine from Real Steel) you will get a manual for this also. I cannot imagine (maybe wrong), that you can simply use a standard lip seal.
