Front door vent seal replacement - late type.

Mine lets in lots of air noise, verified with the strip-of-paper test - open the vent , lace a strip of paper between the glass and the seal, close the vent, see how easily the paper slides through the gap - very easily up the rear edge. I can force the glass in closer to the seal by hand, but the knob wont do that - does this imply some wear in the mechanism? The rear edge of the seal at the bottom, behind the now useless metal bit that was used to latch the vent, has completely gone, there is daylight visible there. The nearside seems to be in much better condition. Has anybody replaced the rubber seal here please, having sold their first born to buy a new seal?
Reading the book it says if you want to remove the mechanism you have to remove the main window glass- surely this is not necessary to replace the vent rubber? 76.31.28 says you can remove the glass and frame by removing a clip(nut?) - is this enough to allow removal of the rubber seal?
thanks

Most of the problem with these is the design of the front bit of the seal which tends to turn in on itself when open and then get crushed by the quarterlight when closing. If you partially open it and carefully prise the rubber seal out as you close it, so it sits on top of the metal surround, instead of flattened behind it, you will find that the noise level will drop considerably. Also it will line up better, and you may find the other sides seal better as well.

Two things though, as soon as you use it again, it will crush the front seal again, and also Rover P6s do make a lot of road/air noise however much you try to stop them. :)

See what you mean about folding in the lip of the rubber....just keeps bending back. Cost of NOS rubbers being a bit prohibitive, I have come at this sideways. Already have some adhesive backed 1/8" foam, so experimented with strips in the gaps. Wouldnt stick to the rubber, so I ended up applying some to the rear edge of the glass, and it sticks quite well, isnt very obvious, and now seals against the old rubber. Another short bit in the front lower corner will help down there. Will report after next freeway run.
