Front wing repairs

Providing the blowtorch will heat the wing and melt the lead then I see no reason why a blowtorch won't work. The oxy-acetylene was never on a fierce heat when I did it. Get yourself some flux and a nice piece of ash to make a float, then find a scrap panel and you're good to have a go at practicing. There must be some tutorials on youtube somewhere.

In fact, here you go....

I haven't watched any of them, but they should give you an idea how to do it.

Thanks, I’ll look into it. If oxy-acetylene isn’t required, then I should have the kit to have a go. It looks far more rewarding than filler.

I re cored a radiator at home a couple of years ago as I wanted the tanks from one rad and the un clogged core from another. I wish I had got one of those Eastwood nozzles for my torch. I could listen to that Wilder guy all night.

I’ve now started on what is hopefully the final repair panel. I know these are available, but I thought I’d have a go at making one. The reverse curve where the arch lip meets the bottom of the wing is tricky.

The warm fuzzy glow comes now I’ve finally welded the patch in without massive distortion or burning holes in the metal.

Wing repair progress continues. I have admitted defeat and accepted that in a couple of areas, I’m not skilled enough to achieve an invisible joint in metal alone. So I’ve had to add as little filler as I can get away with, and moved onto priming the front wing. I’m using Epoxy 421 primer, brushed on over the repairs first, and applied with a roller overall, which works surprisingly well. I’ve ordered a spray can of the final colour. At the moment, I’m just looking for a reasonable finish, and a decent level of protection on the repairs. The rest of the car still needs painting, so this is just an interim job. When I get the car painted, I’ll get this wing redone, and probably get someone more adept at metalwork than me to correct the bits I’m not happy with.

I've done that on trucks using two pack primer, then sprayed with two pack colour and 15+ years later it still looks great.

Today I applied what is hopefully the final coat of primer. All being well, there’s enough film build to allow me to rub back the slight peel texture left by the roller, without going through to bare metal anywhere.

Today I got the primer rubbed down, and got some colour on.

One aerosol was only just enough to do the wing. However, I’ve ended up with some orange peel. Not sure whether it’s best to just try and cut back what I have, and hope there’s enough film thickness left, or buy another can and spray a couple more coats, so there’s a bit more leeway. Maybe as my painting technique improves, I’ll get less peel next time.
