Fuel Filter - full of petrol

Dear Rover friends,

I really need your help & advices, because at the moment I am a little bit scared to drive the car.

since my car is back from the mechanic (after many months standing on his yard - because of new/rebuild BW35, I noticed:

- every day strong smell of fuel inisde the car during driving - after some minutes.
- during driving with CHOKE IN (after 8 miles) yesterday and today (5 miles) , the car losing power and
the car stopped. It was not possible to start the car.

- the fuel filter was full of petrol, which normally runs back after the engine is switched off.
(I have loosened the hose from the filter, let flow out the gasoline from the filter, connected again, then the
car started again and I could drive. Today the same again. too much petrol inside the fuel filter.)

- the last 90km my car consumed approx. 26 litres. (this is far too much)

Fuel filter = approx. 6 years old, but still looks clean

some ideas?
thank you very much

Hi, Change the filter, it sounds like it might have a split or pinhole in it. Does the engine have an AED on it? Check the float valves are sealing.

Could be that your choke is not going off, even though the knob in the car is pushed in. I know the HIF6 have a cold start device that when in need of overhauling does give a lot of trouble.
If you have HS6 check the jets are returning properly.

Hi Richard,

The fuel filter being full of fuel in itself is not indicative of a problem, but given it is 6 years old, a replacement would be advised. Are your carburettors HS6 or HIF6? As Cobraboy indicated, the latter can give real problems when the 'O' ring within the choke assembly is in need of replacement. Your engine will idle terribly and quite possibly stall altogether. When were your carburettors last overhauled?

Ron.

it is a manual choke car. yesterday I changed the fuel filter - on weekend I will make a test drive before freezing temp/winter is coming. I will report to you.
