Future of the forum

What would happen to the technical resource if a new forum was created ?
I have seen another forum's vast historical library wiped out and it has had a devastating effect.

Hello mate that’s the problem if I build a new forum I would not know how to transfer all that info over. So I guess it would be better for someone to take over what’s on here now but obviously we need someone who understands the system.

Hi Rich,

It was sad to learn about your health problems, but i sincerely wish you to recover fully as soon as possible.
Since you understandably decided to step out of managing the forum, i would like to thank you for not only taking care of this forum for a number of years, but also for significantly improving it. Many P6 owners that benefited with one or another way all these years should be grateful to you.

My best wishes to get well soon!

Demetris

can somebody do a link to the technical resource so we can all see how much material is involved please? (I'm not sure where the technical resource is to be honest)

I must be looking in the wrong place. I click on Resources and see 4 items, cant be right

Falkor you worry me. Half the time you are posting replies to posts on here made years ago, and now you cannot see any history ?

That is what a search button is for. You need to know what points to fit, type it in and someone will have done it.
What make of tyres is best for stock steel wheels ? Plenty of threads on that one.

This is not Facebook or Twitter, we have a past and it needs preserving.

Sorry to hear about your Heath problems and wish you all the best mate ....

I don’t comment on here much but has been an invaluable source of information in my restoration..... and long may it continue ... I’m not to savvy with website maintenance and stuff sadly ... I hope between the members we can get something sorted. All the best

I think what falks is referring to is that from the resources page there is a option to download pages but there is only 4 items in there not the whole forum, I think falks comments on old posts in order to provoke discussions
even though the posts are old it keeps us all talking and it’s quite interesting to see the old posts and to keep the conversation going as less people use forums in general.

The post may be old but I still remember them all :p and its a lot of fun to bring back all those old memories.

Yes I understand guys.
My point perhaps clumsily made is if the forum is moved from one provider/system/version to another then the previous threads may be lost, I have seen this happen to years of valuable intel on another forum.
If the continuation of this forum can encompass what has gone before when under new administration then great.
I am not bashing Falks, I just want to ensure that he can still go back and comment on stuff posted in the last century :D

All the history is keepable. In fact the easiest way to keep it is to install xenforo on a new server with a restore of the database and files. I'll happily guide or even do it in the first instance. Don't worry about that side of it. This whole discussion is about keeping it going and intact.

We have 2 and a half people now volunteering effort which is what had been missing up to now. Let's keep this discussion going.

This is just a suggestion I have noticed there is a lot of guests that visit the forum a lot of them don’t register but read interesting invaluable advise on how to keep there car going,
The cost of keeping the forum going has been down to one person to fund so far, completely unfair in my mind,
This might now be split by new management who ever takes over,
Would it not make more sense to workout a small yearly fee divided by the members who use this forum.
You have to register and pay before you can have access to the invaluable content on the forum, because if you just have a donate button most people won’t bother, paying a small fee.
it’s like paying for breakdown cover expect your paying for forum cover.
We are so lucky that the forum is also not plastered from head to foot in adverts, to create revenue, personally I think for the forum to continue the cost should be spread fairly.

How much does it cost to run the forum for a year? Just the outlay, not the work involved.

Richard

not the work in

It's been a while since i added it up to be honest. Probably somewhere around £200. To be clear until I started not engaging costs were usually covered. I'm not sure you need to make it a paid service, just for people to occasionally stick a tenner in the kitty.

If you shut it off to non payees i think you'd get a situation where you'd stop getting new members.

I positively disagree with making it a paid service, and am sure that it would be detrimental to the forum. I'll fund it but leave the "Help to fund the forum" button to help - if it's still here - where is it? :)

Our works IT whizz is on holiday until the end of next week, when he gets back I'll ask him what would be involved in running a forum, as I have just been told that he already has one for some VR type gaming thing he does.

If you are about to disappear into the ether Rich, can I have my oil pressure gauge back before you go please?
