Gear box whine

index.php

That's not a crack in the outer track is it?

Another thing, the end of the teeth on the pinion next to the bearing look to be marked.

These two areas??

I don’t know I’m sure it’s a hair but the teeth do looked marked I will have a look

These two areas??

Yep, those two areas.

Chances are you're right about it being a hair, couldn't be lucky (?) enough for it to be a crack.

The marks on the teeth look like the pinion has moved forward and rubbed against the inner edge of the outer track of the bearing, but I'm not sure if that's possible or not.

My other thought was that the oil supply to that bearing is poor down to a weak pump , though I have heard those pumps weren’t that great anyway

I'd forget about the pump......

I'd think at least the bottom half of that bearing would be under the oil level anyway, and with the shim in front of the bearing, what oil goes in there can't escape out of the other side.

Ok , up pop out to the garage when I can and have a look at that suspect crack and teeth , cause apparently I’ve been out there all weekend and the Mrs is feeling neglected

I think it’s just the picture they seem the same , and it was a hair on the bearing

You say you converted to a manual, any chance you didn't fit a spigot bush in the flywheel for the nose of the input shaft?

I've not done that myself, but I can tell you for certain having seen it, that the first motion shaft will weld itself into the crank bush. Great fun getting the gearbox out after that.

Yea I’ve seen a few of the new transits do that when the spigot bearing collapses .... as you say great fun

Just a thought, but years ago I had a TR7 where the LT-77 gearbox oil pump failed. I got a rebuilt box fitted by a garage in SE London where I lived at the time. I had a terrible while and transmission noise there. Took the car back a number of times until I looked at things myself and found they'd lost a spacer tube. The gearbox casing was touching the crossmember and gearbox vibration was transmitted straight into the cabin. What sort of state is the gearbox maount and snub mount rubber in? I wonder if that's your problem?

No it was an auto and I’ve made it Manual I’ve got the box and a few others and stripped them all and did the bearings as I had no idea of the history of the boxes , the engine ect was also rebuilt , then all had gone back together for its first drive in 2 years , then the gear box started whining.

arrh, is the manual the cause of the problem, did you fit a spigot bearing in the end of the crank?

The problem he has is when his foot is off the clutch, so even if he hadn't changed the spigot bearing, at the time he gets the noise the engine and the first motion shaft are spinning at the same speed, so there's no speed differential to cause the noise. Chances are if he hasn't changed the bush he wouldn't be able to get it into gear now as the first motion shaft would have welded itself into the bush.

I’ve rebuilt the box today and re fitted so far so good very minimal noise from the box , however it has shafted the speedo cable after 15 or so miles , removed cable and the square drive has snapped off gear box end , and there looks to be parts of the cable stuck in the hole ....... balls
