Gearbox oil

Changed the gearbox oil today, the old stuff was a thin oil while the millers classic mini oil was thick almost like treacle. It has not cured the whine but definitely quietened it down. At least I now know what's in their as well . Another good sign , I hope was nothing metallic found in the oil .

I checked the oil level today and it was quite literally empty. I’m glad I didn’t drive in any further than up and down my driveway. I guess that this could well be the source of my noise however I’m concerned as to why it was completely empty. This is a project car and it’s history is unknown. Either it’s been emptied with a view to replacing it by a previous owner or it’s all leaked away through a dodgy seal whilst it’s been laid up. No leaks so far now I’ve filled it up but I guess weak points will only show when it’s hot.

Because of the position of the filler, checking the level often gets neglected, add to that the fact that they are prone to leaks and problems soon arise.

If you ever have to replace a gearbox due to lack of oil then you get good at checking it at every service! Same for differentials!

in my experience a whine in the lower gears which disappears in top gear is usually worn main shaft bearings

Though it was an old comment in the thread, it's worth pointing out that 20W/50 is actually about the same viscosity as 90W gear oil. They are measured with different scales
