Gearknob thread

Hi, does anyone knob the thread for the gearknob? manual and auto, my mate is a wood Turner is looking to make gearknobs so is doing one for me as practice but we need to buy the correct insert.. any help appreciated.

Hello lebaldyman. I'm afraid I can't help you with what thread, but may I enquire whether your wood turning friend might like to make a wooden knob for me too? Ideally more or less the same colour wood as the 'rosewood' formica door and dash trims.

If I recall correctly it’s 1/4-28 (aka 1/4” UNF). Well for the manual, I can’t speak for the auto.

Ahem, LT77 ?

Good thinking, cobraboy! Not to worry. I retro-fitted a gearstick from a 3500S P6, because the SD1 knob looks awful.
So my question to lebaldyman still stands!

Thanks for the replies. I will see what he comes up with but judging by the bowls, pens etc etc he has made it should be good. He does this as a hobby but he is better than he gives himself credit for!

The auto knob just has a rubber insert in the knob, no thread at all, I assume to avoid vibration on your hand?

There's a thread on the top of the lever though, which is designed to cut its own thread into the rubber insert, so knowing that thread would enable a new gearknob to be made.

I'm reminded of something I saw and fell about laughing. It's in a scrappie's yard.
