Gearstick lengths

I was looking for a replacement gearstick on another thread( sorted now), was their any particular reason why there are different lengths available.

IIRC there are three different lengths, Series 1, Series 2 (short stick) and Series 2 (long stick), and four different levers, because there are two types of long stick, one with the plastic acorn, and one with the steel one.

It had to happen. Sooner or later somebody was going to start a thread on the length of their gearstick.

Well I have a long one when in the V8 and now a short one when in the 2000.
Mrs Happy Days doesn't drive so she has no opinion on which feels the best, she says the short one looks better though

She probably says it's what you do with it that counts ......

But I've also heard that you can't beat a bit of length

Vanessa likes her short one!

I like the short one. It feels precise and sporty. Aside from the fact that the long looks to swing too far towards the radio, I think it would offer a little bit too much mechanical advantage. Imagine it would be very easy to put additional stress on synchros with one of these - especially when doing a 'rolling 1st' gear change. Ie, from 2nd to 1st with the car rolling to pull away from a junction smartly.

I agree with Michael. The short one also forces you to treat the gearbox properly - making you feel for the right moment to move the lever. That must be better for the box.

AFAIK, the longer gearstick was introduced to make the somewhat notchy gearchange a bit easier, by having more leverage assumedly which would back up the 'too much force' theory. That's what I heard anyway. I don't like them either, aesthetically speaking.
