Got rid of musty smell?

Those chlorine dioxide bombs can work very well on some odours as they actually kill fungus and bacteria. I believe you can also get ozone treatment but this has to be done professionally..

Reading back Peter's post: has anyone ever gotten good (and more or less decent lasting results) with an ozone-treatment?
Oh, and some of the "engine-bay"perfume got into the interior through the heating by way of a cracked engine breather hose.

Have had a thorough carpet-cleaning and an professional ozone-treatment...
This was only a week ago, but/so the carpets all smell good (put my nose on all of them), the chairs as well.
I took the rear seats out and the source of musty smell was evident: the old felt underneath the rear seats.
A lot less since the ozone, but still present.

So i will remove the felt and change it for new (fresh) material and put the seats back.

Follow up on the topic with the odour and reading a bit on this forum about comparable issues:
There is for sure an issue with engine-bay-smell in the interior (petrol combined with burnt oil), also has a stingy effect on the eyes and throat even after a while.
The smell is not so much musty anymore (apart from the felt underneath the rear seats). I think the ozone did something there.

Also: when i turn off the heating and ventilation, warm air still flows into the cabin (most noticable on the feet).
When driving with the 4 quarter-windows open, the effect of engine-bay-air into cabin seems to become stronger.
I know that the seals of the heaterbox never have been replaced, and reading about this on the forum: would it be safe to assume that the seals of the heaterbox are gone?
Is there a way to check this without removing the box completely (besides inhaling the smell obviously... ;))?

It could be exhaust fumes as driving along with your quarter lights, or other windows open will create a negative pressure in the cabin, therby drawing fumes in from the boot and/or engine bay through any weak grommets or seals.

Have a good check around the bulkhead looking for any damaged seals, including where the throttle linkage goes throughg as well as any cables or wiring. Also, check your boot seal and you can get exhaust into the boot if this is failing.

Thanks quattro, with boot seal you mean the rubber seal around the edges of the boot, on which the lid closes right?
There is no seal between boot and interior?
Now i think about it: the boot has a really strong smell of exhaust/ petrol.

The boot seal looks in good condition and (looking at the imprint on it) closes on the plastic profiling of the bootedges. Although someone has been trying to paint the seal as well...
See images.

The vertical seal of the heaterbox looks and feels good (flexible) also (1st image), the horizontal lower seal i can't find. I hope the image is clear enough but: is this where the small arrow is drawn (2nd image)? There is no seal at all visible there, just some remnants of heat-insulation and a bit of rust.
