Halogen Headlights

Hi Mick,

The halogen lamps I fitted to the outers took H4 bulbs and the P6 connectors went straight on. H1 bulbs are different connection IIRC.

Also you don't need the pilot holder on the outers. Not really a problem as you just leave it disconnected, but the lamps aren't 100% right.

Not sure what he means by this either:
"THEY TAKE A STANDARD L472 BULB FOR MAIN BEAM H1 FOR THE INNER LIGHTS."

Mounting lugs look OK though!

These were the outers I fitted:

IIRC the lugs needed a little fettling, and then setting up on a Beamsetter...but they do make a huge difference to sealed beams.

The seller also does sets of four:

so the set of four will fit. The side light will be redundant so just leave a bulb in their, is that correct Stan. Then its just remove existing and straight in with the new with no added load through fusebox

no added load through fusebox

Provided the halogen bulbs you fit are rated no higher than the original sealed beams. 55/60W draws the same current whether it's from a halogen source or a standard filament. If you fit higher wattage halogens then they will draw more current. I'd still be fitting relays to the main beams as a minimum to reduce the load on the fusebox down to the current taken to switch the relay.

Be careful, many of these cheap Ebay halogen conversions are made in India and are of shockingly poor quality. I found this out the hard way.

I ended up reselling the Indian lights back on Ebay and buying a set of Cibies from Wins International. They are considerably more expensive than their Asian counterparts but the Cibies are very good and you gets whats you pays for. Buy cheap, buy twice and all that...

ian at rover classics had some that were a straight replacement - that's what PAE has...

I have Halogens fitted Mick - I think from one of the suppliers linked above. Mine don't have the sidelight holes & I had to remove the inners' plastic 'sockets' & slot the wires straight onto the spade connectors as they wouldn't directly fit.

I'm generally disappointed with the performance though. They're better than the originals but not much :( & with daily driving against oncoming traffic with dazzling white lights they're not great. I thought there would be a 'Wow' factor but it's difficult to tell the difference. I'm seriously considering putting more powerful bulbs in the dipped beams, so will have to get my head around relays. The mains are 55w like the old ones - but I think full beam was always excellent anyway.

You can see how they look behind the snow

That's interesting Phil , I have emailed the guy with a few questions, so will see what he says. Our light are not the brightest but I dont really have any problems with them. So can afford to take my time

I got a pair of Cibie halogen replacement headlamps from Holden Electrical. They seem to have gone up a bit since I got mine. Quite pricey but a straight fit and aim set up with no messing around :D

As said earlier Dave, you get what you pay for. eBay ones were £40 for a set of four mmmmmmm
What would I be getting for that. Just spoke to Holden and they are quite expensive. 4 times the price of the eBay ones.

Mick

If you have 75W inners then there is no need to change those for halogen as they're more than up to the job. All I changed on mine were the outers.

Which is which? You tell me (see below for answer)

The halogen lenses look slightly more opaque compared to the originals, but I wanted functionality not looks. Besides, if you hadn't seen the original would you be able to tell?

Back in the day ,you could get a set of headlamps from a mid 70's Honda Accord but they must be obsolete by now
What cars have suitable headlamps for the scrapyard-hunter ?
BMW 3 /5 series ?
Jaguar XJ40 ?
