Head gasket

Forgive me for sounding a bit dim but could a head gasket be fitted wrong way in a 1976 p6

Hello Suze, on the 4 cylinder engines no. the part that sits around the timing chain means it can only go one way. Not sure about V8s as I have never owned one.

Presumably you have pressure at the bottom end, so the oil light goes out?

4 cylinder engines always have a good oil supply to the top end, coming up through an oilway at the O/S/R of the block. It's sealed between the block and the head with an O-ring, which if that fails pours oil down the back of the engine, so if that's not the case then either the oilway in the block, or the corresponding one in the head has got blocked while the head was off. There is also a supply to the top timing chain tensioner, with a small strainer, but if that was blocked the chain would be noisy, and you should get oil up from the rear.
Only other thing could be the new gasket faulty, without the hole punched out for the oilway.

That's food for thought thank uou so much will get these points checked out

thats not good. component failure if we don't fix asap. unlikely its been fitted wrongly though as an V8 owner I can't say its not impossible. more likely would be any sort of 'sealer 'such as hylomar being used and blocking oil way or incorrect gasket with oil way hole not punched in it!
ideally a good mechanic will check this sort of thing when fitting new gasket. however blame is not what its about. in any case sounds a though head off again and check gasket . while head is off. have oil way drillings checked not blocked !

Where abouts are you in the country? Where did the head gasket come from? Who did the work - yourself or a local garage?

sorry Vern but we used Hylomar quite a bit when i was working in Fords engine evaluation laboratory .dagenham. it CAN block small orifices if enough is used as creates blockages not easily washed away and is not dissolvable by coolant or engine oil .
used on exhaust manifolds as a gasket ( it burnt off to form a carbon seal) . we use edit on sumps when engine undergoing prototype parts etc . was found in sump pan oil strainer in globules ! so use was restricted after that! most high pressure oil ways will succeed on moving enough Hylomar aside but can restrict oil flow so potential failure can exist ! used sparingly and carefully it is an very useful sealer .

That's interesting, as one of its big features for use in turbines was that it wouldn't clog galleries. Perhaps its a case of how much you use, certainly on a turbine the procedures demand a very thin film & removal of any excess at the edge of the flange.

Yours
Vern
