Help and advice needed, please

I need a bit of guidance from the knowledge base on here for a challenge I have been set....

I have been approached and asked to "FIX" a 6 pot P5 engine. Details are sketchy, but it seems to be in bits, which in and of itself isn't too much of an issue, but the reason it got into the box is as yet, unknown.
Where can I find a detailed parts breakdown and specifications for clearances, torques etc so I am not stumbling about in the dark, please?

Is this a "run away, screaming" scenario or is the engine straightforward and free of traps to lure the unwary into potentially expensive errors?
I have never even seen one of these engines in the flesh, hence my questions.....

Thanks, in anticipation!

Best bet would be to buy a P5 workshop manual. The engine is basically the same as the 2.6 lump in a Land Rover. Later ones had the Weslake head which had different manifolds IIRC. They all have the inlet valves in the head and the exhaust valves are sidevalve.

Ah, the plot thickens, then.
There have been mumblings of a Land Rover R6 which was a South African Military build needing an engine job and spares being scarce, and willing mechanics scarcer.

John,

Try speaking to Rob Leimer, http://www.robleimers.co.za/ he is in your part of the world and a very useful source of IOE Land Rover engine spares particularly the bits that are NLS in the UK although for some reason his site is currently down but hopefully this is a temporary glitch.

Also go to Series 1 2 and 3 workshop and parts catalogue | Landroverweb.com where you should find all the tech stuff you need F.O.C. in downloadable pdf files.

Ain't the internet wonderful? :):)

Good luck

Alan

No I'm UK based but came across Rob whilst searching for parts for a top end overhaul of my P4 90 engine.

The SA landrovers did come with the 2.6 OHC engine from the P76 with twin carbs. so if it doesn't look like and EOI engine it may be one of them....

Is that the same lump as the SD1 2600?
The one with the cylinder head issues?

I don't know for certain, but in SA they got a 2.6 litre version of the "E" Series engine, which was 2200 over here when it was in the landcrab and wedge Princess. IIRC it got put in the Marina/Ital (and SD1) in SA. I bet the Marina handled well......

Thanks, Harvey!
It sounds like the same motor. I asked the guy that approached me for clarification on the type and it's gone quiet, so I will wait until I get home from work and follow up.
If it is indeed the SD/Marina motor, then should be able to dig up a Haynes or similar manual, if it's the P5 lump, I will be approaching the Forum for help.
