HELP!, IDEAS PLEASE

Here we go
my v8 has been stood for 28 years
now mot;d but has issues like running!
it starts , loves choke, but settles down after about 20 mins
then i go to drive it and it goes onto spluttering and nearly conking out until it gets more choke.
carbs have been cleaned etc as has most of it
it ticks over lovely although if you blip the throttle you get a higher or lower reading say 9000rpm instead of 7 000rpm and then 6ooo rpm
still, then after a mile or so you stop, leave it say 30 mins and its the devils own job to start
even after a minute its reluctant to start, you need a good battery
i have electronic ignition to try but why allthe choke?
the choke cable has been lubricatedbut the last half inch before the knob is in (not sure how to phrase that so sorry!) seems to make no difference to anything as the choke light will be out by then anyway
it ticks over quite well, with no choke it will carry on for an hour probably.
then you go to drive it and its barely moving until it has choke.
ideas please
if any women from bournemouth read this then its 'sensible' ideas ple  ase!

thats been done i think
i'm pretty sure of it anyway?
i'll check
i need to get to 'classics on the prom' this year
and get home again!
actually, i think mrs Cross did the timing?
i'll get that confirmed when she,s sober again after xmas i guess

Sounds like an air leak on the inlet side could be perished seals in carb or inlet manifold leak. I'd check fuel flow and filter also.

thanks for that Pat
i seem to remember Crosser saying similar
i'll inspect it boxing day when this christmas stuff is sorted and in the bin
i really want to check it tomorrow but it might mean death for some reason?
some women just have their prorities all wrong!
thanks again
and to rockdemon

Sounds like its running lean, so as above for air leaks or possible carb tune required plus also add in a dash of fuel vaporisation with engine heatsoak.

If it's been stood a long time, how confident of the fuel are you? If it still has any of the old fuel, that could be all that's wrong. Drain the tank and refill with fresh!

I had a similar problem to what you describe i.e. devil to start after 30 mins etc, check the condition of the points (I have a boyer bransdon electronic ignition system which uses the points as a switch so, no burning or pitting) however you still need to make sure that the gap is correct when fully open (0.015" that is 15 thou) and the dwell angle is between 26 and 28 deg.

I have had a similar problem in the past which turned out to be the fuel filter ( in line ). A nice economical remedy if it turns out to be the filter good luck. Stephen

Still no joy .
I tried fitting an electronic ignition thing y'day but they sent it with no instructions.
I rang them and they said it was straight forward
It might be for them! Grrrrr.
the weather has been dreadful as we all know so I, ve not done much else.
the inline filter I will change.
that is something I can handle!
I fitted a replacement aerial to my van and rendered it undrivable cos all I get now is radio one!
Aarrgghh!

At long last I, ve managed to have a play with the car again and I changed to inljne fuel filter as the man suggested and hey presto , its running like a good'un
so tank draining time, it sounds like fun and I have a 2200tc to practice on too,,
