Hi all,

Having reassembled the Guvnor after her respray I'm struggling to get the brake lights and reversing lights to work.

I still haven't connected the osf light unit and rear number plate light but this shouldn't effect the above should it?.

All the lights worked before the car was stripped and the reversing light switch on the gearbox was replaced before its last MOT.

I have checked all the connections as per the wiring diagram and the only lights that work are side lights and indicators, there is also power to the number plate wires

The bulbs work independently but there is no power at the connectors for the lamp unit to the loom.

I've no idea what to do now, any ideas?

Check the fuses.

Check for a live supply at the brake light switch, if you find one, bypass the switch (join the wires together), and then see if they work. Do the same with the two green/brown (IIRC) wires on the inhibitor switch. Depending on the results of that, I could advise further.

Hi, check also the multi plug down by the 'A' post where the rear loom plugs into the
main loom.

After the re-spray??? I'd be looking at all earth connections. Could be that there is paint preventing a proper connection.

You say you haven't connected the off side lamp, remember the wires are linked at that lamp to feed nearside, check bullet connectors.

Well I've fitted the front osf side light unit and checked the fuses.

Couldn't find the brake peddle switch.....?? Any ideas where I can find this

I then jacked the car up on the front crossmember to get to the reversing light switch and the reversing lights come on, the connections to the switch were fine

I then loose both front and back ns lights and dash lights.

Had enough by now so drop the car off the jack and all the lights work again apart from the brake lights!

No idea what to do now

On the drivers side inner wing, down in front of the servo. Follow the brake pipe out of the servo and you'll come to it.

have u tried sticking a volt meter on the signal wire at the back to see if u have any voltage??? if not then trace back from there.

So think the reversing lights was a loose connection behind the Central radio speaker.

Checked the brake switch, by connecting the wires together and the brake lights worked!.

So am I correct in saying this is a faulty brake switch?, if this is correct I have a replacement.

When changing the switches over will I loose brake loads of brake fluid?.

The two bullet connectors behind the speaker, which can come disconnected.

Yes, a faulty switch. Seems to be a common occurance.

Not if you're quick.

When you swap the brake light switch, have a wet cloth handy, and tuck it beneath the junction where the brake fluid is likely to leak. Also have aa dry cloth on hand to wipe up afterwards. Brake fluid is water soluble, so the wet cloth will prevent damage to your paintwork. I got taught this trick the other week whilst I was having some tedious brake trouble, documented elsewhere on here...
