HIF6 needle question

Hi.
After a long winded restoration, I have finally got the old girl back on the road. In order to get her to run ok I have to turn the mixture screws in 4 turns each from flush with the bridge and even then when I raise the lift pins it almost cuts out. Needles are set in the piston correctly. All new gaskets fitted and float levels correct. Idle speeds set with optical tachometer. Car has K & N filters fitted so am wondering if I need richer needles. My ones are BBG, what needles do you think I should get?

Thanks
Glen.

the cutting out wont be solved with different needles - you need to richen the carbs at idle i think.

Needles for your engine i have a pc program i can run and see what it suggests for your setup but the only surefire way to know exactly is a rolling road tune...

Rich.

I wonder if you rebuilt the cold start devices ? The HIF6 ran so much nicer on my car after a rebuild of those.

cold start? I was aware they had a choke .. and a fuel temperature self adjusting HIF carb .. though I suffer lot of fuel problems . I suspect much down to vapour/temp issues with ethanol etc. having refurbed both carbs and added electric fuel pump its still highly embarrassing to try and zip across at a right turn when road is busy and finding car deciding to amber at own pace ..yes I got a real bast on the horn from an angry motorist.. even foot on the floor got me up a mild! hill at 28 mph ( on a v8 here) .return journey .. started easily zipped across junctions and I actually nearly over took a car going uphill on a 2 lane carriageway ! ( ran out of road ...so my score for overtaking another car not actually parked = still a sad 0 after 5 years)
sadly still no reason found yet for that intermittent go slow or normal ..it seems to decide what it wants to do when it wants. takes a lot of joy out of owning it but apart from being a money pit I guess thats what owning old cars is about. :) hers top another 5 years ..and who knows maybe ... I can increase my overtaking score .. ( parked cars don't count) I am looking at checking fuel return pipe to tank soon as its just possible it may be restricted ? and thus gas bubbles forming in modern fuel building up and why engine stumbles or cut's out when pulling up at lights! doubt I am only rover owner whom had? or having such issues . wife wants Mem to flog it to an unsuspecting person ( thats something I can't do) and buy a car that actually works as it should. Theres rover p5b owner I know having power issues too. low power randomly! same engine though he does not have the fuel return to tank.
