How many have Radios

Does anyone have an 8-track in theirs?

I had a Pioneer 8 track one fitted at the dealer . I removed it for a new fangled Kenwood digital for my iPod just recently . I had an 8 track recorder in the home stereo so could get modern songs laid down . Blanks were too hard to get so ---- she had to go .

My 2000 has an ECKO radio in it which doesn't work but looks good. So I have left it there and installed a Sony radio/MP3 player hidden in the drivers side glove box. I might upgrade the speakers at some point but will keep them hidden by the gear lever and rear parcel shelf.

I like the idea of a retro looking radio with all the mod cons but I have a couple of modern stereo's sitting here so may hide it away in the glovebox if there is enough room.

Am I right in thinking to upgrade the rear speaker I need very small hands or the fuel tank removed to get to the screws .

My 1968 S1 still has the Beltek AM/FM stereo radio/8 track as fitted when new!
I cant find the 8 track tapes I know ive got somewhere to test it though!

My old 2000TC (KMH 909K where are you?!) had a period National Panasonic cassette/radio fitted that I still have in my loft somewhere...

My old 3500 (JPM 458M where are you?!) had a period Clarion cassette/radio fitted that I wish I'd kept (along with the ruddy car itself)...!!!

They both played through the standard speakers (I think?!) and the sound quality wasn't 100% perfect!

If I was to get another P6 (which I will very soon I hope!) I would have to get a period Radiomobile or such like fitted with an MP3 cable attached... P6's just don't look 'right' with anything modern fitted whether it's subtle or not!

I have a (yet to be fitted) Becker Europa II period radio to fit to my car. The nice thing is it had a DIN aux in on the back so I picked up a 3.5mm to DIN cable to plug in my ipod. At present the New Rover (1969 2000TC NADA) has the AC still fitted in the cabin. Compressor and other bits have been removed from the engine bay. This means the radio hole is on the driver's glove box door (what a stupid place to put it!). I have a normal center piece to fit and I think I will go for that as I prefer the look of the cabin with it.

The Becker units are really nice, I'm lucky in that I live near their US service center and was able to get spares for it last month. The service guys are classic fans and were very friendly. The radios turn up on fleabay frequently, but can be expensive. I was lucky in that I found one that had a misspelled title and got it for about $100.

Here's what it looks like:

Roly of this very forum was kind enough to send me some info and invoices from a car that he's dismantled which was supplied new by HH&Co. in 1974. In the sales invoice it was fitted with a Radiomobile 108SR at a cost of £86.88 & VAT @ 10%.

Petrol at the time would have been about a tenth the price it is now, how much would that make the radio at today's prices?

The Bank of England website has an inflation calculator which puts it at £843. Sounds a staggering amount for a radio, but then the various overpriced ICE options on today's cars are probably comparable. Volvo, Audi and BMW all offer a TV option for around £800.

Original Motorola ( I Presume :?: )from 64 is still fitted into ARG lights up and makes a noise but not tried tuning it into anything :?
Have a modern bluetooth unit (Aldi) in RKP which works well just store all my music on my Phone and play it through the stereo! Was thinking of fitting something similar but hidden into ARG with speakers hidden below seats or something just so its all reversible! No idea if its even possible given the positive earth issue and output from the dynamo though :?:

That is one of the three radios mentioned in the Service Notes for the release of the 2000. It would have been fitted by the dealer at the new owners' request.

The problem with positive earth is trying to get anything modern to work. You can either take a feed directly from the battery, or send the radio off to have an MP3 lead fitted to it..

I have just been looking through the box of bits I got with the car and found this radio, I take it the purple wire is for the live, a spade connector on the body of the radio for the ear and obviously 1 speaker, also how do I go about adding a MP3 link to it as a few of you have said.

Looking at the rear of your radio, it doesn't appear to have the 6pin DIN connection required to plug in a lead to your MP3 player.

I've a 2001-year high-end Pioneer CD player (P7000R) with aux-in through the CD changer socket, to which I've fitted an iPhone charging adapter from eBay. It thus far powers two 6x9s loud enough for motorway driving. Got lucky and found a very discrete little iPhone holder that sticks to the dash finisher over the pass knee bin and can be accessed well.

I had a period radio fitted from new in my now sold 3500 'DEG 911K' which worked very well 95% of the time. I had it permanently tuned into a classic station so had a constant stream of T-Rex, Bowie, The Stones, Led Zep etc, perfect for an early '70s car. If I get another P6 (which I hope will be sooner rather than later) then I'll probably go down the MP3 / I-pod route. I'm hoping to get this done in my P5B Coupe very soon once I've paid for two more tyres

You can still wire in an aux connection despite lacking the DIN cassette plug, you just need to be a bit handy with a soldering iron. Googling will return guides, plus vague information and offers of help like this one on RetroRides.

mine has speakers fitted in door cards ( groan) thus making opening and closing windows difficult plus damaging looks but was common idea in late 70's to do.
has motorola radio fitted which is in fact almost useless as analogue etc.
