How much slack in overhauled rear hubs?

I have just put wheels on the rear of my Rover project. I can jiggle the wheels so that it make a clunking sound on both sides. It is so long ago I overhauled the hub and changed the wheelbearings. I do remember that I followed what the book says about tightening and using a spring weight to check I have got the right preload. However, this seems like way too much slack. Any advice?

The slack is there whether I rock the wheel at 12 and six or at 3 and 9. And it is the same on both wheels.

That sounds as though the preload hasn't been set correctly. The procedure in the book is a bit hit and miss so it's not really surprising. There shouldn't be any play, but when tightening and crushing the spacer, when you get to the point that the play disappears, further tightening doesn't give any indication that you could be going too far, hence the spring balance idea.

Ok, thank you Harvey. Do you suggest I can retighten the hubs then? Maybe i can do it in situ, so i dont need to take everything apart again? And then just tighten until the slack is gone.

If you want to follow the factory setting procedure then the hub and driveshaft need to be removed as a unit. If you tighten the nut with it all fitted to the car then you run the risk of overtightening, but with the proper setting procedure as it is, and the fact that there shouldn't be any play once it's set, then if you tighten until all play is removed then you will improve matters providing you don't go too far. It's difficult to advise other than to say the choice is yours.

Ok, i will do as I suggested then and see where it leads me. After all, I was not very successful when I tried to follow the book. Regards Barten

I have now tightened both rear hubs. The slack is gone and nothing has broken :D
Time will tell if it ok on the road I guess. I just hope it will be running soon!

If you haven't gone too far past the point where the play disappeared I can't see there being a problem.
