"How To Do It" - section ?

Hi all

(Jimmy is stored for winter, and I do not have the access and conditions to sort out all the little things that have accumulated. But I am frenzily reading the workshop manual and everything else I can about the little bugger :D (...including the "Haynes Book Of Lies" I bought  ...)... ).

Going through the "wipers"-thread, posted by happydays in the "V8-engine"-forum, I read that there should be plenty of pics about the subject somewhere in the forum. These might be hard to find as original posts turn and change subject, as is said in that thread.

I remembered that on http://fordtransit.org/forum/ there are hints, pics and all knowledge collected, sorted and gathered in a thread outside the original thread. It is a "Technical How To", like an encyclopedia to look up what you need to know.

Having this here would spare a lot of repeats and awkward postings including mine.
I don´t know ANYTHING about forum technology, would not dare to ask somebody to take up the extra work, but do think that this is a sensible thing if manageable.

Regards, have a SUNNY weekend all !!!

stefan

(I do already miss the engine burble and ALL the stuff that Jimmy does. I can hardly wait to drive him again).

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

I think that's a good idea Stefan. Maybe that would be a nice little project for the Webmaster whilst he convalescing?

If there was a separate section then any useful posts could be edited and copied into there.

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

Especially Chris York's Carb setting and handling threads!

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

Yes I think a seperate section where the guides are copied and locked so we don't get loads of daft stuff on the end.

The original work can be in the appropriate section, where it can be fully dicussed, and then edited down for the guides section.

I'll get something going....

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

Is it possible to set any included photos as an attachment in the text rather than image links in case people mess about with their Photobucket links.

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

Me too, I would love to see a "DIY" or "How-To" section, or sections - maybe one within each technical forum category..?

Excellent idea Paul. The inclusion of photos would be most beneficial and should thus be included with any guides that are written.

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

I think this would be a great idea.... In fact, how long before we can collate and publish our findings?! Get out of town, Haynes!! :D

I also think the photo attachment idea would be a good one. And whilst on that topic, would it be possible to add a feature whereby uploaded photos are automatically resized irrespective of upload size? The Morris Minor OC forum has this feature, and it's a really useful for the pic-heavy members projects section.

Sorry Rick! As if you don't have enough to think about! :?
Hope you're doing well.

You guys eh, want the earth.

I used to say to the boss "the impossible we can do, but mirracles take a little while" To which he usually replies "nah 5 minute job, just a bit of code" :(

I've been thinking about the auto resize for a while.

In that case, mind if I throw in another request? We occasionally talk about part numbers and what alternatives can be fitted (there was one about brake pads not too long ago). It would be handy to have a list in one place somewhere.
I'd be happy to help collate any of this if need be.

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

Good idea! There was one set up on the X-type section of the Jag forum a few months ago http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/viewtopic. ... 0&start=15 and it has proved very popular. The majority of the guides were created as PDFs and most (including mine) hosted independently. Then it was just a case of posting a reply to the post and adding in the link. Would cut down the work for our webmaster!
Regards,
Dave

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

Oooh, very good idea!!

Certainly a great way to get costs down! I'd be happy to help out with this too. Maybe we can all pull together and have a go??

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

WOW  !

This is going to be good !
I am so impressed, I must say.
I hope I can contribute in some way !

(I´d like the first copy of the book !
I´ll trade it for the one with the lies in it ... ! :D )

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

auto resize would be awesome.

tech thread on engine timing and points would be brilliant.

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

Those of you that own/have owned a Moto Guzzi may be familiar with a book called Guzziology. It is a work of art by a bloke called Dave Richardsonand and is along the lines propsed for this topic.
Here's a bit of it... http://www.motointernational.com/guz_spl.htm

I for one, would be happy to shell out for the first edition, so I challenge the "fundi's" (learned ones) out there to gather all the scraps of paper and rummage in the recesses of the mind for those little snippets and put pen to paper/fingers to keyboard for the uneducated masses that merely dabble to enjoy access to the knowledge of the ages... :)

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

all of the above please :D :D :D and the moon as well
it would be a great help especialy for people like me computerphobic  mechanicalphobic  not too bad at whats left but no master.

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

This does sound very good. I guess like other forum members I use the much appreciated search tool. However, it can be a little hit & miss trying to get all the info in the right order and sometimes you get can get conflicting/incomplete advice. So, it would be fantastic to have some definitive guides based on the huge amount of knowledge and technical advice that our experts have on the forum. If our Webmaster wants to go ahead, I would volunteer help with any donkey work that might need doing. I'm just a bit concerned as Richard is supposed to be taking it easy at the moment and has at least one major project of his own kicking off.

One totally off the wall idea I had was, would it be possibe to use Wiki instead of the fourm? I have never even edited an article nevermind created one. Just wondered if this would maybe allow contributors to create articles that are accessible to everyone and maybe take some burden off our Webmaster? Just an idea :?: :?:

That is a very good idea indeed!
Personally, I have created and edited wiki sites before (mainly on behalf of historic building society), and the format is very good. Visually, it's clean and clear. You can add all sorts of multimedia bits to it too (videos, animations, pics, etc), but for me the biggest advantage is that it can be edited. The forum is absolutely brilliant as what it is - a forum - a place to 'meet', discuss problems, swap knowledge and experience, and provide solutions to individual issues, but that format isn't very universal. With a wiki site, we could create definitive articles, with the editing process taking place continuously, progressively refining an article to accommodate all differences in approach. You can completely get around the 'bookish' problems of outdated or omitted information, and the need for a revised editions.

All that remains to be considered is what we will talk about on the forum once it's all done!! :D

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

I like the wiki idea, I can install a wiki engine on our server, so it will be our own CRF wiki.

Before I get carried away, do more people think it's a good idea, or would you just prefer a forum "How To" section ?

Maybe a poll should be setup.
