Interchangeability

Gentlemen,
Can you fit any Borg Warner (BW) 35 or 65 gearbox to the p6 v8?
Can one take a BW gearbox from say a Jaguar or Zodiac and just switch the bell housings?
I would appreciate your advice.
Sincerely
Max.

Zodiacs did indeed use the BW35 box, but they are not directly interchangeable, you would need to fully strip the box to make one fit using the parts from a ROVER box.
Jaguars are again different, and would need some work to retrofit, using parts from a ROVER box.
You would be better off using,or looking for the correct box.

A Zodiac box is not, as far as I know, BW, but a Ford box .

Zodiac Mk2, 3, & 4 had BW35s. Ford loosely copied the 35 when they made their C3 box, but that didn't come until quite a bit later, even the Mk3 Cortina started off with a BW35.

I’ve been asked if a BW 65 is a direct replacement for a BW 35 in a P6 without modifications.

I don’t know of course, but would be grateful if someone does.

It's not a direct swap, even if you use the P6B BW65. But the modifications are minimal. You need to use the BW65 selector cable, and you need to fabricate and fit a bracket for the cable on the underside of the tunnel. This only applies to V8 cars obviously.

Any other BW65 needs more serious modification to get it to fit.

Hi, I have just bought a kit car with with a sd1 engine and gearbox. The car wont go faster than 10 mph and the previous owner tells me the clutches in the gearbox have gone as he was driving it for a while with the brakes binding. I have had a quote to rebuild the gearbox if it is a standard rebuild but have also been looking for a replacement.. Not sure I want to buy a box that it is claimed to be reconditioned on Ebay. My question is what would need to be done to the more available XJ6 bw 65/66 to be able to fit it to my SD1 engine. Obviously bell housing is a start. I think the gearbox currently fitted is a BW65. Many thanks in advance.

If it is a BW65 then the bellhousing is different to the Jag one as you say, but the tailshaft and housing are different as well, the Jag being much shorter. If you want your box rebuilt, or an exchange box, have a word with Andy (click on the link to his profile below)

He can do something for you, and although he does list on ebay, he's one of the good guys.

Thanks for your prompt reply Harvey.

Isn't the control block different per application. A Jag engine can rev higher for example.

I don't know about the Jag box revving higher, the only one I know of that does that in the lower gears to make it more "sporty" was the Triumph PI saloon. There will be variations though, the Jag box won't have the range control valve fitted, so it won't have the hill start or second gear start functions.
