interior light

Hi all, can someone give me an idea of why my interior (roof) lense is loose and with some vibration falls out?
Is there supposed to be a seal or foam or spring loaded mechanism to hold it in place?
Is it still available or something to use in place?
Thanks

I replaced my old one with a new (and very cheap) one listed for a Land Rover Discovery and found that it did that. I cured it quite easily and it has behaved itself for the last couple of years. No doubt you'd find this reply a lot more useful if I could remember how I cured it. Sorry.
Probably sticky tape to pad out the edge where it can't be seen.

I've fitted an LED festoon to replace the original bulb so it no longer gets as hot.

I replaced the boot/trunk and cabin light bulb with an LED as well.
Can see stuff at night now.
In fact I replaced a lot of dash lights too with LED.
Side lamps and number plate - all changed.
She looks like a Xmas tree .

I'd love to replace those as well.
Is it as straightforward as the others you mentioned?
(I had some trouble finding an appropriate LED for the map light, though, because some tended to be too big in diameter... ).

I converted a number of years ago to LED and can't remember it being a problem.
You will lose the dash dimming capabilities with going LED. Although a different resistor will get it working again.I don't drive that much at night , so the brightness doesn't worry me.
Gear select got a festoon Led as did the interior light and centre console [A/C model]
Map light was just as easy.
I just took the different size dash lights down to my local LED SMD guy and he matched them .
like I said - Xmas as night now.

.

You can add a dimmer into the dash lights if you want,so you can dim to your hearts content LED Light Dimmer Brightness Adjustable Control Controller 12V 8A

Hi.
The interior light has a plastic ring in the lamp which acts as a spring to keep lens cover under tension to stop it falling off.

That would work - should be able to slip that in place of the OE rheostat.

Yes, it should fit.

The reason you need this rather than the original is that the standard rheostat will not provide the type of voltage change that leds respond to.

The digital mark to space ratio of the replacement dimmer gives the visual effect of dimming the light though the led is actually at full brightness for a varying amount of time ie at full brightness it is always turned on but at half brightness 50% of the time it is actually turned off and 50% fully turned on and so on until it appears to be very dim when it may be that 1% of the time it is turned fully on and 99% of the time turned off. This gives the visual illusion of dimming.
