interior wood

Am I going mad, or have I seen p6's with really glossy shiny woodwork? Is there something other than the dark and light Formica?

Thanks

J

There were 3 factory types of formica available. Series one cars had a mid brown colour with a fine grain pattern, series 2 had the dark brown with black grain pattern until that was replaced with a pale (almost honey) colour for the last couple of years. However, a number of people have made replacement sets in high gloss wood veneer. Burr walnut and the like, the options are limitless. Thankfully I haven't seen any done in carbon fibre yet...
There was also real wood fitted to the first 1000 or so cars but you probably won't ever see any of those.

I believe there are four shades, plus the original wood:

Jan. 1963 - August 1964 - Wood

September 1964 to approx 1967 - quite a bright, orangy coloured formica (it looks better than the real wood)

1967- 1970 - (To the end of Series 1) the mid brown fine grain

1970 - 1975 - (Series II) Rosewood (the darky, red, one)

1975 - 1977 - The light, pale, honey colour.

I'll try and get a photo today of at least three of these together.

Thanks guys,

I'm heading towards burr walnut or a nice rebellious Zebrano........ Unlikely to look at carbon fibre I'm afraid!

Anyone tried veneering the existing trim yet? I think I can use 0.6 mm veneers glued on and just ease the cappings wide enough with a bit of heat and a broad screwdriver.

Why not stick the new veneers onto something else? That way you won't have to worry about the fitting (or risk damaging on installation). I regularly use sheet aluminium for all sorts of odd jobs (like my home made K&N's!). I get it 30"x36" sheets from the local hardware shop - it's just the thermal barrier you put behind a boiler, but has a great finish, is dead easy to cut and surprisingly durable.

As per my project page list I will be cutting some ebony macassar for mine.
I was thinking of veneering onto balsa strips..though I haven't given it too much thought yet.
One thing's for sure, properly sealing sanding and buffing hardwood veneers will be rather time consuming to get them to a gloss finish
Worthwhile if you like that sort of thing though

I got a complete set made of real wood from a guy on ebay, did a deal for about £40!
A couple of other forumites also purchased some, but I havent seen them for sale for a while, but sure they maybe available if he were asked!
The set can be used for the S1 or 2.

I fitted a set of those to a car for somebody a little while back and they were excellent, easy to fit (some trimming to length required) and a nice finish, certainly nicer than the formica, but not too "in your face"

I'm quite liking the look of this Formica...... fairly local to me too!

Although a coat of nice polyurethane laquer would give it that nice rich gloss.

As promised here's some original P6 'wood'.

Rosewood (1970-1975) top. The fine grained wood used from circa 1967 to August 1970 below.

This is the formica introduced to replace the original wood finish in September 1964. Looks great.

Last but not least - this is 1964 'wood' (above) vs. late 1960's wood (circa 1967-1970). The later 'wood' is definitely less flamboyant in colour.

I'll have to look through my wood pile now Nick. I've not noticed the difference in the series 1 wood before. How can you tell the real wood from the formica replacement? They look so similar. Mind you, i'm really liking that stuff in Pilkie's car, that looks really tasteful. Much nicer than the walnut imo.

Marcus is that standard rover trim? I do like the grain on your dash.

With a black interior & dark rosewood the inside of mine is looking very dour and drab...... I want something striking to lift the interior - hence the Burl walnut as a possibility......

hi,
i had a set made by a guy in norfolk. he used to advertise in the club magazine, but that was years ago.

pilkie, your a little wrong on them fitting series one and two, they won't. strip speedo's have longer pieces either side of the dash.

I was informed that the long section supplied is long enough,so when cut the sections will fit both sides S1 or s2!
Maybe that was misinformation!!

Jim, I already have that set of photos saved in my green hornet project folder on my laptop.
They helped inspire my choice to do ebony macassar with cream upholstery when the time comes
Probably not quite as glossy as that, although it could just be the camera flash.
Colour and tone wise very nice to my eyes too

I have brand new in the wrappers sets of the rosewood trims. Which is a pity as I have a black interior and I think the combination is too dark and depressing. Nor do I like the 1970 medium wood that is in there. Yes I know it's original, but it could go in a box for the next owner, couldn't it. I looked at length at the Formica catalogue that was posted on this thread earlier and I'm afraid to say my eye was rather taken by a nice lime green and by a particularely violent shade of light blue.... I fell to thinking about doing the centres of the Vitesse wheels to match and perhaps the rear 1/4 panel as well..... These againt a white car could provide a sort of updated version of the early Federal livery with the Cambridge Blue 1/4 panels and trim details...

I expect I'm just dreaming, so I'll give it some time to pass before I do anything!
