is it worth getting the Flu Jab?

6 years ago I went down to the local GP Surgery , they advertised a "free for all" 1 Saturday morning anybody could just turn up, got the flu jab then, very easy, well organised but didn't bother after that until yesterday, when I popped into a local Chemist, paid the £12 , no side effects so far.

anybody else feel they should have it? or feel they shouldn't have it? there are two different vaccines, 1 for people under age 65 , 1 for people over age 65.

my Father in law was really ill after getting the flu jab last week, felt very poorly for a week so i was wondering if that would happen to me but it didn't

Im very suspicious of "modern" medicine and the corporate marketing.
I get the "jab"

Just had my Flu Jab, no side effects. Had a little discomfort once in the eight years I have had them.

I react badly to all drugs, so wouldn't have one. I even had a bad reaction to allopurinol, which apparently never happens.

My doctor assured me that I should keep trying it as the side effects would reduce, and there was no other way to cure gout. I changed my diet and have now cured it myself. I did have a mistrust of doctors when prescribing medicines as I don't believe many of them are necessary.

Conversely I could loose my eyesight if I ignored all drugs, I think there is a balance to be struck and definitely antibiotics over prescribed.

The problem with the flu jab is there are many different types of fly, and they come out of China as there are lots of people, swine and poultry living in close proximity, where different strains can mix as a result.
So they guess what stain my be floating around over the winter and produce a vaccine against these strains.

now if we vaccinate the weakest say 30 percent of the population then these people will benefit as the stronger 70 percent of the population will catch these strains (hopefully).

Now if we vaccinate 100 percent of the population then we have now selected for different strains of the flu which will arrive on the next plane from China. People will not worry about coming into contact with these people as they have been vaccinated, but they will get sick anyway as they have not been vaccinated against this strain. Then this will spread the the weaker people.

So now the weakest 30 percent will be more affected, and in a bad way.
So by all means get vaccinated if you are in a high risk category, but we should not push for 100 percent vaccination rate.

Now as for getting research funding to prove my theory or see if it fithe epidemiology, that will never happen as it would reduce the sale on vaccines!

I've never bothered. I dislike needles, but would have it if I thought it made any difference.

My wife and I had the 'flu jab a number of years ago, and it reset our immune reactions completely.
My wife was suddenly sensitive to our cats, she got bad hay fever and Spring time has been a nightmare for her since.
We are both of the opinion that she would not have contracted the H1N1 in 2008 if she had not had that jab.
My reaction wasn't as bad, but I now get hay fever where previously, I didn't.

So, no, I won't be doing that again....

How do you actually know that it was the flu jab that caused those. Or is it guesswork and co-incidences?

The main reason i ask is that hay fever has no connection with the jab and also has no connection with whether you have had a dose of flu or a cold. It has a totally different cause and is probably more due to something in your environment changing than anything to do with the jab or flu. With all the cleaning stuff that's around these days together with air fresheners of different sorts it's no wonder people have developed things they didn't have earlier in life... Having said that, though, your body changes over time and you can be less resilient to things as you grow older and so get things like Hay Fever where you didn't earlier.

As a lifetime sufferer of asthma and hay fever I find that banning in car and house air fresheners is a good thing, not to mention those e cigarettes that "only" give out water vapour, sorry, pull the other one it's got bells on, they definitely affect my breathing! Whilst we are on the subject fabric conditioners affect my eczema and my asthma, I don't use them for that reason.

There's a lot more things more likely to have caused your woes than the flu jab I'm afraid!

It is not based on any empirical evidence from tests or analysis, rather, it's based on both of us being mostly healthy for the years preceding the jab, but then coming down with the seasonal flu within weeks of the jab, and my developing hay fever the next spring, from NEVER having had it in my life before, and my wife having reactions to our cats. She was previously sensetive to the same breed before we met, but had built up an immunity and by the time we got the cats she was fine with 3 Persians which were her main sensetivity trigger, until that jab ended it for her.

Just one of those things, then. The Flue Jab could have been the cause for the cat allergy coming back, or perhaps it never went away and the cats had done something different, but the hay fever could have been caused by anything.

I've had a flu jab every year for the past 3 years. I got hit with flu the year before I started getting the jab and it knocked me for six. "Never again" I said. Also having 2 very young boys in the house I want to minimise their exposure to flu. Christ, it's bad enough when they get a cough and a cold never mind if they got flu.

As our wonderful government want us to be well and not have the flu maybe the next step will be a free house :p

Flu jab: depends on engine. If 2000, 2200 or 3500, all with carburettors, probably not. If engine modified or replaced, however, then injection might well be relevant! As for “flue jab” : suggest leaving this to chimney sweep!

Yes, our wonderful government want us to be well. It is absolutely not true that they get a big back hander from the big pharma companies for promoting their products in this way.

Evidence?

I recon it's better to stop people getting flu in the first place than taking up valuable hospital beds that could be better used treating more important illnesses and gumming up your local GPs appointments... But that view doesn't fit the conspiracy theories though, does it... I suppose people don't want MMR jabs or other vaccinations either... Gawd help us all.
