Jammed starter?

Hi, just been out and started the car ( p6 2000 tc), started as normal but noticed the rev counter was not working, engine did not sound normal, switched off ignition but engine still ran !! , jumped out of car removed battery cover and disconnect he neg terminal, engine stopped.
left it for 20 mins while having a look around, touched the neg terminal with the earth lead and engine ran, removed lead, put the car in gear and rocked it, thought i heard a click?, reconnect the battery, engine off, restart and switch off 4/5 times with every thing normal, suspect starter jammed, could this be a one off type of incident or a sign off impending starter failure, recon starter fitted only 3 months ago.
any advise would be great regards Steve.
 
Hi, Welcome to the world of inertia starter motors, it may be a one off but it could become more frequent. However having said check the ignition switch isn't sticking, like wise the starter relay. They are easier to do than removing the starter to check that.

Colin, thanks for that, its the first time it has happened, and hopefully the last, i will just monitor it for the moment, and see how it developes.
