kick down function on 77 v8 auto

hi all this is my 1st post i'm a new and 1st time owner of a rover p6 after many years of admiring the classic british muscle car at various shows i finally decided to buy one. so far i'm very pleased however i noticed the other day when i was travelling at around 60-70 mph that the kick down function would not work.... is this normal behaviour or would i need to make ajustments to the kick down cable, i took the car out this morning and tried at a lower speed of 40mph and it worked fine. i also tried to drop manually from d to 2 and the lever would not move whilst car was in motion, i know on the last modern day auto i could shift down whilst driving should i beable to do the same???? regards wayne

Hi, You're going too fast for second gear for it to kickdown so it doesn't. In fact around that speed is the upshift speed in second gear full throttle.
