Leaking a lot of trans oil

So I just brought my first p6. Love the car. Very tidy all around however there is an issue. The seller told me there was a minor transmission leak - turns out it's more than a minor leak. It's leaking quite seriously. It appears to be coming from inside the bell-housing. Is this a common problem? Also, how difficult is it to remove the trans to replace the seal? I heard you potentially need to remove the engine too? I will be aiming to drive it 500km home in a week or so so I am really needing to repair it before hand. Any tips? Thanks!

If the fluid is pouring out of the bellhousing then the chances are that it's the front pump seal. To confirm that, ideally you would powerwash the box and then run it to make sure that's where it's coming from. If it's a BW35 then the box can be removed leaving the bellhousing and converter in place. Then you can prize the seal out and replace it. The BW65 the box has to be removed as a unit with the bellhousing and converter attached. If the car has been left standing then sometimes the seals go hard and leak, but using the car may cause the seal to soften and stop the leak.

Hi HarveyP6. Thanks for the info. I have noticed that the leak seems to have slowed down. Hopefully that's the reason - it's just been sitting for to long. How can I know if I have the BW35 or BW65? It's a 1972 model. Thanks
