Let's hear your exhaust note!

Hey,

Took a bit of a recording of the exhaust note on my P6 when I gave it a run out today, first time i have really been able to give it a bit of a rev when parked up a little bit out into the countryside where i wouldn't be annoying the neighbours with the noise.

It's running a 2.5" system with a straight through central muffler and no rear resonator and what look like different aftermarket manifolds (or extractors as they get called over here). It's a touch on the loud side and i'm hoping it loses a little bit of the hollow echoeyness that's present currently as it beds in when i get a chance to do more km's now that it's back on the road.

I had to leave the camera (cameraphone) sitting on top of the boot and about 2-3m away on the ground behind the car as any closer and the mic was cutting out and alas i was all by myself so didn't have anyone else to hold the cam present.
On the move it isn't droney inside the car thankfully so doesn't intrude much.

And one of a brief (and keeping it legal) 0-100kph run without thrashing the old girl so you can hear it on the move. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5G_GS8_Tolk

Would be interested in hearing the sound of other peoples for comparison if anyone has video/audio clips of theirs too.

Cheers,

Al

sounds good to me... looks like you need to grease the speedo drive cable before it goes though?

Hello Al,

Definitely sounds like a V8... :) The hollow sound that you mention will diminish once you have quite a few thousand k's up.

I am really hoping to have a recording very soon of mine, so I'll post as soon as I do.

That likely what's causing the needle bounce I take it? Which end is most likely needing greased or is it worth doing both?

Cheers,

Al

Hi All,

That "bounce" isn't necessarily down to the cable IMHO.
I have just replaced mine with a perfect, brand new cable because of severe bounce.
The process was a success with the problem fixed. But........
The result is almost exactly as yours appears, with only a minimal tremor.
I would assume that this may possibly indicate "aged" worm gears etc. in the speedo and angle drive assemblies.
Would it be worth replacing the 2x angle drives at gearbox and speedo and the cable?

If greasing the old cable remove from the sleeve and clean. Then grease lightly and return to sleeve, remembering to leave the last inch prior to the speedo free of grease.

RT.

I guess it could be the angle drives at either end of the cable too. Thing is if one bit goes it can take the other bits with it!

A tickle learned from the P4 club but I don't see why it wouldn't affect P6's too. On the P4's the mileage/trip indicators lose lubrication & start to stiffen up, causing a braking effect on the cable which makes the speedo needle bounce. I re-lubed our 110's odometers & it worked quite well. I haven't done the job on a P6.

Thanks for the sound clips guys, that made me smile this morning. I haven't heard the engine noise from mine since November.

Al, love the cartwheel that you did when you picked the camera up

Ron, look forward to hearing your car when you get the chance too.

interesting plate not zv, how did you get that? regards rich

Rich,
It's an original Irish registered car, first registered to General Distributers Ltd (later Gendist Fire Protection) in Dublin in 1973 (hence the ZJ letters). According to to the company it was assigned as a company car to one of their directors. Luckily the original type black lettering on red backround/black lettering on white backround plates stayed on the car as they are now difficult to get hold of. A new set were put on the car circa 1980/81 by Finbarr Galvins (Renault dealer) in Cork.
Regards,
Dave

Some great videos there guys, loving the pops on overrun on your S1 Gareth and the first video of your white one i think is my favorite of yours Dave.

Interesting on the cable/speedo. I think my first port of call will be to lube the speedo gears themselves to see if that sorts it and then will work back to the elbows and cable if not.

Definately inspiring me to get mine out and about some more to bed it in and get rid of some of the hollowness. :)

Cheers,

Al
