Lowering The front - Again!

Hi All,
Having read the many posts on here in the past about lowering the front, hows this for an Idea, rather than cutting the spring (which I personally dont like the Idea of - causes all sorts of problems with springs falling out ot their pans etc. when jacked up) how about shortening the strut? If you remove say an inch from the strut would this not lower the car but also have the advantage that the actuation of the suspension is unaffected?
Before anyone asks, yes this mod would be for completly cosmetic reasons!
Cheers

Hi alimorg

As you may have noticed, doing this occupied my mind for some time !! Am I becoming the chatrooms pub bore on the subject ?? Anyway If by the strut you mean the rod running into the spring pan, this seems the logical thing to shorten. I did think it could be screwed in on its threads, but looking at drawings the rods they are probably screwed right up to a blanked end (I've never seen one off the car though so stand to be corrected). Screwing the rods OUT would be a bad idea as it would weaken the rod/pan connection. Modifying the parts would be a simple and elegant way of doing it, but would be serious engineering from a safety point of view (Insurance ?).

Perhaps someone who has dismantled the suspension could answer the screw question ?? (probabably a mute point as the whole assembly will be seazed solid by now, (SPELLING!))

I think if you wanted adjustable suspension if would be best to try and fit a coil over unit in place of the spring and do away with the shock. At least you could mess around with spring rates etc and find out what is the best set up.

Not everyone wants an adjustable set up though. Most are interested in lowering the car slightly for a sleeker look. It has been done so someone out there knows the answer to the question what poundage/ free length of spring must be fitted.

Who are they and where are they??!!?? Got to be an oppurtunity for one of suppliers to do the research and offer a sports suspension kit.

Sheffield Coilsprings can supply fast road springs slightly stiffened and lowered.
See article in August mag.

HI All,
Just spoke to sheffield coilsprings and have been quoted £145+vat for a set of four springs (front and rear) made to my spec (thay can do uprated and lowered 25/30/40/50/60/mm or LOWER!) for a 3500s.
They have a twenty working day lead time from reciept of order you can visit their website HERE
Just thought I would let you know
Cheers

Ive jsut sent them an email query - Rear springs on my estate are not up to the job! - Goodness knows how bad they would be when loaded!

£145+vat sounds pretty good to me for brand new springs, never mind custom made to your spec. If anybody does get some, please report back so we can all order !!

Richard :)

Just got a quote for 136£ + VAT for 2 heavy duty rears including delivery to Belgium (and heavy items to Belgium cost an arm and a leg and some!)

Probably order in the summer. Then maybe I can put some weight in the back and test the estate load area!

Excelent result !

I've been away for a while, so I have only just seen the thread. Sheffield Coil Springs are going to have a bit of a rush then. I coughed up for some new rear springs in the summer (boo hoo) and paid as much as that ! Can I judtify to the wife another set ?

Your wish is my command :D

I have one of these in next week, and should have a kit available soon.

PS - I'm new here, and I know that adverts are not allowed, but I saw this thread and wanted to let you know ;)

Beverley.

So I am not the only one who visits both MG and the P6 forum.

I am Johnny with the Spectre ZT??

:D

Beverley.

I have just bought another 3500S.

When you get more details, can you please email me - I would be very interested - especially if you can beat Sheffield!!

I may need some prices for lowering the ZT slightly as well!

Cheers, Johnny. :D

The kit we will be doing is a full on suspension kit, not just springs. And yes, we do the ZT too ;)

Oh, and just as an aside, after I read the initial post, NEVER NEVER cut springs, it is an absolute no no :)

Hi Beverly,

What are the specifications of the kit you are offering and do you have and idea of price?

I think one thing that might be useful to consider is that it is quite difficult to change the front springs on the P6. They need to be precompressed and locked using a set of 3 forged rods that are not easlily obtainable. Even then its apparently a bit of a risky business if the spring cups aren't in good condition.

It would be a shame to hinder sales because people are put off by the problems of fitting them or the costs of getting a specialist to do the work.

Other methods that I've heard of to remove (and thats only remove) the front springs involve either cutting the spring with an oxy-acetylene torch or unbolting the suspension rocker from the bulkhead with the spring uncompressed.

I have heard of a clever method for refitting which involves welding a set of nuts onto the back of the spring cup and using high tensile threaded rod to compress the spring before refitting.

I've heard rumours that there are a set of standard spring compressors that will fit but I've tried numerous sets and been unable to manage to get any to fit (safely)

Anyone got any suggestions?

Bennet

Thank you Bennet

We're quite used to unusual projects like this, and I'm sure we'll find a way !

I really appreciate your imput, and if there are any other words of warning, then please keep them coming :D

As for prices, I really have no idea at the moment, but I will keep you posted as to how we get along. Hopefully I'll get pictures too - might even contact one of the mags for a feature.

Sign me up for a set now!!!!
I am getting tired of wearing the doorhandles out on the Blue car, and the local boy racers give me stick all the time. I can out turn them but the angle of roll is getting scary! :0
As soon as they are ready, let me know and I will test them on Australian roads for you. For free!
Can't wait, I'm getting excited already.
Cheers
GUY :)

Hello, Any news on the lowering kit and prices?

With the lowered springs from power coils would you need to use shortend dampers with these? You can buy a set of standard dampers from JR Wadhams for a hundred quid.

Cheers

Hello does anyone know the answer to my question? Or do things more a little slowly on this forum?

Still keen for the kit, and ready with the cash!
Please let us know how the research goes, I am doing some of my own but it gets expensive to do it on your own.
