I picked a random area of chassis and gave it a gentle clean with a fine wire brush and WD40!!

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Had a good couple of days on the chassis..
Go to stripdown pics towards the end..
Its free of all bolt on items and now I can get to all the little nooks, turn it over and do the underside.
I knew the builders tressles would come in handy one day!!
Its coming up great,, :D and ive been thinking about getting it lightly sand blasted, etched and powdercoated!!
Will continue cleaning it,and find out the cost on Tues when back at work,as theres a place I deliver to that does it!
Can get a few more suspension items done at the same time!
And while its away being done I can clean and paint the axle and other bits, ready for refitting.

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Wow looks verry solid Pilky, needs not welding? A good base for your restauration. I follow your posts on this forum, good luck

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Wow, that has come up well, not much rust there at all, and what there is looks like surface. Shouldn't take much blasting to get that cleaned up. Might be worth while even if you paint it by hand rather than powder coat, I guess it'll depend on the costs.

Do you ever end up buying a shed like the rest of us ?

Hope my P3 chassis comes up like that.

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

No welding needed ANYWHERE!! :D :D
Not even on any of the straight body panels!! :) :)
The only rust that caused a hole was in the petrol tank, where water had settled! :(
Unfortunately the MG specialists list a replacement "repro" tank at £440,,
BUT! You know me! :)
I happened to fall on a just listed on Ebay, rare NOS fuel tank just a 1.5hr drive of me and jumped on it with an Email, and did a deal for £150,+ a box of mainly nos and excellent goodies I valued at £450 for £100! :D BARGAIN!!!
Now all I need to be lucky in finding as well is a good running original engine.

Have been reading up on powdercoating chassis' and I have almost decided against it.
I have a ltr of epoxymastic rustbuster ive been saving,so will use that in conjunction with a spray on stoneguard, thats overpaintable, and finish off with either satin or gloss black.
I will then treat the chassis to a good dose of waxoil!!

There is however some rot,but this is rot in 3 sections of wood,"not the wet kind",and these are easily bought and screwed into place.

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Hi, have you thought about Galvanising it and then over painting it in gloss black?
Should last then.

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Ive considered galv,, but overall, given the use its going to get in this country,"and more than likely its gonna be dry use only",And as the chassis is so solid/thick metal all over, I think my approach will be adequate.
I know it may be a good selling point for the future, but the next owner will probably be a fair weather driver as well! :)

Ive cleaned up the easy 2/3 of it,now for the front and fiddly bits!!

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

You might be as well to just use the epoxymastic without anything else. a) it should be up to the job, and b) any buyer will be able to see the quality of the chassis without it being hidden under a layer of stonechip. Spray some waxoil inside and your done.

Out of interest, can't you spray the epoxymastic ? to get a better finish.

yes - it comes with a bottle of thinners for that very purpose :)

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

I sprayed the under floorpan of a dolly sprint I had years ago and it looked good.
May need to get another ltr to do it all, will see how it comes out before stonechipping.

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

If the chassis has lasted 58 years without powder coat I would suggest it doesn't need it
Is there a danger of it distorting with the heat if galvanised or powdercoated ?

Re: Pilkies new project!! 1954 MG TF1500

Thats true, but I doubt it got wet very often if at all in the USA!!
Also a possibility, but only by those who dont know what they are doing!!
