More fuel gauge woes

I've had my '75 V8 auto for a couple of weeks now and everything works.....but. I filled it tonight to go away at weekend and fuel gauge only shows half full. I know the tank is full. Sender dodgy is my first thought. Any ideas? Thanks.

Pulling the wire from the sender and grounding it to the chassis should send the gauge to max, if it does then the gauge is fine and the trouble lies with the sender or the earthing from the tank to chassis.
