My '72 P6 V8 is back in use on UK roads and once again wearing its silver on black 'K' plates!

Re: The optimist

Now that is looking Georgeous!

That dark blue really suits the car - I can't imagine why Rover didn't do a colour like that.

Are you coming over to Petworth? You could travel in convoy with Stefan in Jimmy and pick Hans up along the way! We desperately need some competition to stop Richard (Quattro) cleaning out the entire prize cabinet!

Re: The optimist

Yes, that's lovely. There's another P6 in Admiralty blue on here somewhere & that looks superb too. I remarked at the time that it suited the P6 even better than the P5. It does seem to be a colour that Rover should have offered (even though they'd use any colour if you asked) & I can't imagine that they didn't try a dark blue for size.

Re: The optimist

Looks very good !! You have hard work last day's good luck these day's with the finishing.

Re: The optimist

That colour is awesome Al <salivating>

I can't wait to see the finished vehicle.

 I don't know if I can make it down there Chris, it's a pigging long way down, and apparently just as far back.

Re: The optimist

Glad y'all like. Thanks for the nice remarks. Chris, that's a nice idea, I'll think about it. If I could afford the trip all the way from Berlin, Richard Quattro wouldn't be able to make any excuses. Don't reckon my car would win anything other than Attendee From Farthest Away, especially not in competition against Sparky, but I'm not doing this for trophies. I'm daydreaming about a grand tour to the Cȏte D'Azur when I'm finished, but the truth is if I don't find some work soon I won't be able to drive the thing anywhere. :?

Get yourself down there, and a couple of miles back, then disconnect a couple of wires and ring the AA, they can bring you the rest of the way for free

Re: The optimist

Today I f*#ked up whilst fitting the bootlid. I had a feeling I had two bolts for the hinges that were the wrong ones, and too long. I wound one in to see how much would need to be cut off, and being a klutz I've managed to make an impression from the underside of the bootlid. Like a dent in reverse. A pointy dimple. Really annoyed with myself. What with the shiny dark paint and the strip lighting it looks really bl*#dy noticeable to me. Does anybody know if this can somehow be 'flattened out' now?

Re: The optimist

We have people over here who come out for dent repair and minor scratches.

Do you have companies like that in Berlin?

Don't feel too bad about it though Al, we all do things like that.

Each hinge has two bolts of different lengths, and it's very easy to get them muddled up if you don't know, or don't think about what you're doing. It won't make you feel any better I'm afraid, but you're not the first, and you certainly won't be the last, to do that. As said previously, a good "Dent Magician" will be able to fix that, without leaving a trace, but he won't let you watch while he's doing it.....

Not only this, but even if you use the the correct bolts at the correct positions if you bolt in one of the two too much and the other is realtively slack and you somehow don't support the bootlid exactly as you should, you will have the same dissapointing result.
Guess how i know this.
The fact that the manual does mention that you should take extra care for this very reason while fitting the bootlid didn't help either.

Re: The optimist

You also have to be careful how you hold the bootlid when putting it on as it will tend to fall backwards, and the hinges can form two little upward dents.

Didn't happen with Sparky, I learn my lessons well 8)

Yep, a Dentmaster will do that; as its an alloy panel it should be easier to sort than steel. I've seen a tech in Sydney working on a Ferrari that had been hit by a hailstorm; took him weeks of work, but ended up with a mirror finish that didn't require any repainting. Yellow Pages ( does Germany have Yellow Pages? )

Re: The optimist

I think the internet replaced yellow pages ! It still is delivered but is a fraction of it's former size

Re: The optimist

Not suprising considering how much they were charging for advertising, I remember I used to pay something like £1k a year to be in it.

Simply stunning Al.

Sorry to hear about the boot lid though, hope it can be sorted easily.

Re: The optimist

Front wings had to come off again today, so that I could drill two more holes in my new sills for the lower wing fittings. Pain in the back job, lying on the garage floor, filing out the holes into squares for the little plastic bung thingamyjigs.
I'm going to have to take off the rear wings again too, to make holes in the new rear splash panels for the lower mounting flanges to bolt to. And the bootlid will probably have to come off again to get the rubber seal back in. Too bl#*dy fiddly working upside down with the bootlid on the car. I did the seals underneath the bonnet in-situ, twisting my neck to fiddle the rear seal back in.
I had to touch in the inner rear lip of the bonnet, which the painters had primed in a pale grey, but missed with the final colour. It was really noticeable once I had the bonnet attached to the car. Also the front face of the bonnet stiffening crossmember had to be painted in. Now I can't decide if I should re-fit the old, tatty, torn underbonnet insulation, or get something new and cut it to fit. Anybody got any suggestions for this?
I hope to get the painted parts all attached by the end of this weekend. Nerve wracking having panels leant against everywhere in my lock-up. Is re-fitting the door glass, handles, etc. easier with the doors hung on the base unit, or with them off the car?

I'd say on the car every time.

Me too - the doors are very heavy when fitted out and can be difficult to line up. Get the retaining strap on fairly quickly though, as you can damage the door by letting it swing open too far.
