My Wednesday Fun..... NOT !

Well, after never being in an ambulance in my life, I managed 2 on Wednesday.

Recovery from my transplant is generally going well, and I'd probably been doing a little too much the day before, took a load of junk from the garage to the tip, bought some trousers at ASDA and even made it to our club meeting including 2 helpings of pie and peas (yes I know I'm greedy).

Anyway, wednesday morning, got up as usual, all pretty normal, if a little tired having not slept much. Hooked up to work, discussing some stuff with my no.2 and suddenly I start shivering and shaking. Decide to take a lie down, maybe just an effect of the steroids I'm taking, watched "Homes under the Hammer" while shivering away violently, then the vomitting started.....

At this point I called the wife to come home from work, then called the hospital who told me to come straight in, decided there was no way I was going to make it to Sheffield (to my transplant team), so I dialed 999.

Straight into my local A&E past the queue, straight on the drips, followed by bigger and bigger oxygen masks, then they pulled my into the resus room, all very scarey.

Anyway they managed to get me stable pretty quick, in fact I'm seriously impressed by the response and treatment, my consultant even came down from the haematology dept to check me out, they liased with Sheffield and had me transferred as soon as I was stable enough and they'd got me a bed. Excellent service.

They've managed to grow the bug from some blood cultures and it was a nasty one, they had to change the antibiotics as it is resistant to the ones they started me on. They also removed the line I had which went into my jugular vein (for injecting treatment and taking blood samples) as a potential source of infection. That was fun, took them an hour to cut it out and stitch me up. They have subsequently tested it and found that it probably was the source of infection, hence the quick onset.

The infection appeared to have attacked my muscles in some way as I haven't been able to walk until yesterday evening, just very painful, they took xrays but couldn't find anything. It's getting better now, I can make it to the loo, so I don't have to pee in a bottle.

So I'm currently feet up in sunny Sheffield again. Hopefully I'll be home again early next week.

All a bit of a shock really, but mighty impressed with our NHS again, no messing, everything done efficiently, tops marks from me.

Just goes to show how quick these things can take hold. Glad it turned out ok and you're on the mend.

Take care Rich

Must have been a bit of a shock, on the plus side though is how
Quickly the emergency services responded. Here to a quick recovery.

Sounds like you're in good hands Richard.
Hope you feel better soon
Hey, it's good you can be online in there- you can plan exactly what you'll do with your convertible when you're up to it.
down to the last nut and bolt :D

Wow Boss, that's scary, good to hear you're on the mend.

Dangerous place to buy trousers Asda is.

Dangerous place to buy trousers Asda is.

Damn right it is !

I wouldn't normally bother, but all my others appear to have shrunk  And the wife was threatening to go with me, so I decided to turn a day long shopping trip into a 5 minute stop off at Asda and go on my own.

Plus they were selling 5ltr of concentrated screen wash for £2 so that made the trip worth while, maybe not the ambulance/A&E bit though....

Wow what a rollercoaster ride must have been prity scary, glad the emergency services worked thier magic on you Rich :D Heres wishing you a speedy recovery and a pleasant drive home

Wow! I had noticed you'd dissappeared for a few days and was just working up to an enquiry... Getting to see the inside of the resus room is not something you want to do a second time, so take care!

Best wishes

Chris

Spoken to Rick a couple of times last few days.

Things are progressing and hopefully they will let him out to play in a day or so.

I reckon he's right when he says he did too much...he will never learn!

Glad you're OK Richard. That must have been scary. It's frightening to think that an infection can take hold so quickly. Keep your strength up and hope you get home soon.

Thanks everybody.

Well I'm back home again now. Still pretty weak, managed to lose 1/2 a stone in the few days I was in hospital. Soon get that back on

They established that the infection was in the line that I had, and basically when I did the weekly flush I shoved all the infection straight into my vein, my system immediately went pop and that explains why I was ok one minute and a complete mess the next. If I'd had the line flushed at the hospital I would probably have collapsed there in the waiting room.

Good news really, as they've removed the line now, so it won't happen again, and any "normal" infection would take much longer to come on, giving me time to get it sorted.

Anyway, I've been told to stay on the sofa for a few days, so it's forum, sweets and TV for me

Good you're back home again Richard. What you need is some Scotch Pies to get that weight back on :D .

Glad to hear your back home Richard :D may be put your feet up too that way your more likely to relax and rest
