New owner...

Hello all,

I've recently become the happy owner of this car... I'm aware a few of you know it's history on here. To my knowledge there's nothing to ghastly about it's history... but If you know something I don't and should be aware of please PM me..

Luckily between myself and my best friend we're both mechanically minded and this particular model is being looked after very well.

To answer any FAQ's...
1 - Yes I bought those wheels and tyres (despite it having black minilites before the previous owner sold them)
2 -Previous owner actually did his best to get the car back to looking more original
3- Yes it's the "wrong" bonnet.
4- I know it was green once, luckily I prefer the white!

Anyway, I've wanted one of these cars since I was 7 years old, I owned a Triumph 2000 previously and finally I've got this.. I'm very happy with it, and look forward to keeping another p6 on the road as long as possible.

Look forward to meeting some of you at the odd gathering..

Thanks!

Chris

I'm pretty sure that it was ringed a few years ago. Does that count?
Excuse my ignorance on this one.... genuine question..... if it's been ringed in the past has since had a genuine few owners since and now has a valid V5... where does that leave me?

Well, it's a guess on my part based on pictures. I've never seen the car in person.

The V5 means nothing, but from a DVLA standpoint, so does my opinion. So, in theory, you're safe either way.

Thats sort of good to know. Thanks.
Still got a lot to learn about these things....

If you open the boot, and lift up the edge of the carpet on the horizontal edge between the spare wheel (left-hand looking forward) and the back of the car, you should see a rectangular tag with a number on it. I'd be interested to know what the number is.

There are a lot of little tells regarding the age of the cars. If you're after a good book to buy, pick up a copy of Rover P6, by James Taylor.

If you're on facebook, search for Federal Rovers Group.

hi there, welcome to this mad house of misinformation and help.
That looks to be a very nice car BTW, not sure what ringed means but the respray does it for me, white is the best colour in the tropics...

I'm guessing that one of the duplicate numbers is a misprint. Although not conclusive, B for Buick V8, A for Automatic. We've seen cars in the range of BA033xxx on a 1971 NADA V8, and BA 051xxx on a 1973 Export P6B, making anything in the BA065/BA066 much later, which would make sense looking at your car.

It should be in the same range as the NADA mentioned above.

You're missing various telltales; boot and rear wings are series 1 with later series 2 badging - or a lot of holes have been filled in when painted. Vinyl rear quarter-panels. Bonnet and grille. Switch panel is probably series 2 4-cyl SC. External badges are 72 model year, so Oct 71 onwards, as are the ashtrays. Headrests are Jan 72 onwards. Choke and petrol reserve handles are Feb 73 onwards.

The lighter wood trim is 74 model year, and the rocker switch for the heated rear window is 75 model year. That last one, I believe, is the main telltale. Most people would fit the earlier switch, as it's simply easier to fit into place, as it's round and we all have round drill bits in the garage. The rocker switch requires a rectangular hole. You normally wouldn't swap the two.

I think your car is potentially a 75/76 one, or at least the base unit was. I'd suggest looking at your engine number, gearbox number and diff number. It could simply be that a later base unit was used to rebuild the car, which is fine. However, if the numbers all line up to a 75/76 car, that's the difference between rebuilding and just swapping the plates over.

Another place to look is the glass. You can date the glass from the Triplex markings; http://www.bobine.nl/turner/01-general-information/triplex-glass-manufacturing-date-codes/

Hi Chris,

Thank you for that info I appreciate it. I'll go digging and see what I can come up with. Is there a handy link for where to find the Engine, gearbox and diff number? I did have a brief look last night but didn't come up with much.

Regardless, I'm still happy to own it and I'd rather that then another p6 ends up rusting away somewhere. For the price I paid there was no doubt in my mind there would have been something hidden about it...
