*~ NEW~* P5 Bumpers in Stainless Steel

That seems like a fairly reasonable price for the full set including overiders when you consider the cost of repairing and rechroming old ones.

Can anyone persuade him to start doing rear bumpers for a P6?

Lurking in the shadows, somewhere in the nether regions of the back of my mind (next to the Periodic table, above the family tree for Tolkien's Silmarillion) is a vague memory of someone saying they had enquired about stainless back bumpers for P6s - or at the very least new chrome steel ones. I wonder if that could become a reality? There's certainly a guaranteed market for them. I'd have two. One for the car, and one just to look as a perfect P6 back bumper!

Great idea for the P6 that. I'd have to take issue with the 'never corrodes' bit about 304 stainless though. It's vastly tougher than mild steel but definitely not 'corrosion proof'.

Harringtons are the main, possibly only maker of classic car s/s bumpers!
Their office is I think in Bath and they manufacture in,ship from Vietnam.
I did approach them about P6 bumpers and overriders, they would need 3 perfectly straight bumpers,"2000,V8 and rear" and a full set of overriders to use as templates.
Cost was said to be about £750 a set not to inc overriders, but depends if demand was high enough to warrant production.
However I do believe they make to order as well!!
The finish is not as bling as chrome, and it scratches easily, and would need to be polished out, according to a few Triumph TR owners who have bought them.
It would still be cheaper to have a good straight, rust free set chromed by a reputable chromer!!
The problem arises when you need to have a rust/dent repair done, thats where a good lot of the cost gets swallowed up!
If anyone is up for sending them a set to replicate then contact them here.

I wouldn't have thought there were enough P5's stateside to warrant manufacture, though they could be aiming for the UK/European market of course. £1050 is a hefty chunk though.

If you click on their home page / shop, they seem to do bumpers for a wide variety of low volume cars. I'd guess the press tools are fairly low quality and that there is a lot of hand finishing involved.

Seems very cheap to me US$1,500 would be cheaper than that getting a set refurbished to new here in NZ and adding to the niceness of it all is the stainless aspect!! So long as it had a durable highly polished surface there seems no down side to me.

I almost ended up stocking the Harringtons ones for Jags. Never got to see them in the flesh :)

Hi,

Unfortunately the way Stainless Steel protects itself from corrosion means that they don’t really hold a chrome like shine. Stainless steels protect themselves by forming a very thin layer of chrome oxide (corrosion) over there surface, this layer then helps to prevent any further corrosion. Although this layer is transparent it does tend to make the surface a wee bit more grey than bright chrome. You can keep polishing it off but it will keep reforming. Stainless steels are also not as strong (not really a good engineering word but you get the drift) as “normal” steels so can’t be used as an automatic substitute in the likes of bolting or anywhere else where high strength is needed.

There are +ve's and -ve's, you just have to make your choice.
