Hi all

Rik from Lincoln - new member looking to move into P6 ownership

Question is V8 or Four pot?

I have located a solid 2200SC with a genuine owner but would I be happy with it knowing that there are V8`s out there?

If any 2200SC owners would like to share their thoughts on how they perform please feel free to comment

Still learning about these fabulous cars, my father had several 3500`s back in the 70`s so I guess that is where the desire was born

All advice gratefully received

Thank you

How often are you planning to drive it? I use a 2000TC every day and love it. While a V8 would appeal, I do too many miles to live with the fuel consumption. The only times I'd like more power is while climbing some of the steeper hills with a car load of people and kit. For the rest of the time I find it perfectly adequate and seldom have trouble getting past modern traffic. I find that driving quickly on decent A roads is more about maintaining momentum and that's where the superb cornering abilities of a well sorted P6 give us the advantage. I have heard people say that the 4cyl actually handles better than the v8...

High days and holidays only

It will visit a lot of local shows in the summer and then sit on life support until the sun shines again in the spring

Not the best way to keep a car I admit but they do not rust in a heated dry garage

As a loyal 4 potter I'd say no, but in terms of investment, general kudos and that noise, then I'd have to concede that they probably are.
However if you can't afford an immaculate V8, an immaculate 4-pot would be a better buy than a scruffy V8.

Go for a V8 if you can. They are worth it just for the incredible sound they make - that V8 rumble that everyone talks about. Plus they really shift when you put your foot down!
As for fuel consumption, I get about 22mpg around town and 28mpg on a run so not that punishing really? Particularly if you are not driving it that much.
But each to their own - they are all lovely cars. The ride quality is stunning although they are a bit floaty on the corners in my opinion!

I have a 2200SC with a manual gearbox and find that it is perfectly usable and enjoyable as an everyday car. I have never found it to be particularly underpowered and will keep up with modern traffic easily, in fact I often get confused looks when I overtake them in the fast lane!

I have previously had a 2000TC, but have honestly always had a hankering for a 3500S. However I agree with Willy, when I found what is now my car for sale I deemed it to be a good, honest and affordable 2200SC. It had low mileage, history and the owner was a genuine enthusiast. For me all of that and the 'feeling' I got about the particular car was more important than what engine it had. I am very glad I purchased my car and although I would still love a 3500s I would add it to my line up rather than replace my 2200SC.

V8 engine is easier to look after and the noise is the best engine noise you could want on a car IMHO... 4 pots better MPG (but v8s arent as bad as people think if they're in tune!) and the handling is marginally better on the 4 pot.

Thank you all for your input

I have found a very low mileage 3500 that I am going to view on Friday, I also like the look of the black series 1 that has a series 2 interior

Low mileage is always best though?

with age condition is the most important factor IMHO... you can get cars that have been well looked after and renovated but that have higher mileage. Also need to be wary of cars that are hardly used as that brings an entirely different set of niggles.
